Few Nativities, or birthdays are celebrated within the liturgical year. The feast days of Saints are celebrated on the day of their death, their birth into eternal life in heaven. While there are exceptions to the death date, only three Nativities are celebrated in the liturgical year.
The first is obvious – the Nativity of Jesus Christ. All that is Christian Faith centers on the birth of Our Lord and Savior. The second is the Nativity of Our Blessed Mother, Mary on September 8. And the last is the Nativity of John the Baptist. Church tradition holds that John was born without the stain of original sin. Unlike Mary, who is the Immaculate Conception, that is conceived without the mark of original sin, John’s soul was purified by the Holy Spirit while still in his mother’s womb. Luke 1:15 tells us of the Angel Gabriel who told Zechariah of John’s purification – “He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb.”
Here in America, Catholics acknowledge the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist with a mass, yet in other parts of the world bon fires are lit in celebration. I would wager that is a sight to behold.
John the Baptist is associated with wandering in the wilderness, and living on a diet of locus and honey. While I’m sure grasshoppers are a great source of protein, even covered in chocolate, I think I would need to pass. However; who could resist a Grasshopper Pie? Creamy, minty with a chocolate cookie crust. What a wonderful way to celebrate the birth of the Forerunner, John the Baptist.

Simple Grasshopper Pie
1 cup Boiling Water
1 (3 oz.) Lime Flavor Gelatin
1/4 cup Cold Water
2 tablespoons Green Crème de Menthe
2 tablespoons White Crème de Cacao Liqueur
2 cups Whipped Topping
1 (6 oz) Chocolate Cookie Crumb Crust
1 (4-inch long) chunk Semi-Sweet Chocolate
Add boiling water to gelatin mix in large bowl; stir 2 minutes until completely dissolved. Stir in cold water and both liqueurs. Refrigerate 90 minutes or until slightly thickened. Gently fold in the whipped topping until smooth.
Spoon Grasshopper filling into pie crust. Refrigerate at least 3 hours or until firm.
While the pie chills, make chocolate curls. Place a chunk of thick chocolate about 4-inches long in the microwave. Soften chocolate at 50% power in intervals of 10 to 15 seconds. The chocolate needs to be soft, not melted. Use a vegetable peeler, scrape the blade lengthwise along the softened chocolate to create curls. Place curls in the refrigerator to set.
When ready to serve, slice pie and top each slice with chocolate curls for garnish just before serving.
