Did you know that today is National Liqueur Day? It is, but that’s not really why I’ve shared a recipe for making Vodka Kahlua. The fact that it is National Liqueur Day only prompted me to think about the holidays.
Holidays means giving those we love gifts. Why not let those gifts reflect not only their likes or needs, but something we’ve made ourselves, that comes from the heart. Home made spirits are a nice touch. You can get cute bottles from places like Pier One or World Market. Include a little basket, a couple of shot glasses and maybe a home-made card. How old-fashion and how lovely. I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather get something homemade than mass produced.
Now this Vodka Kahlua could be consumed a day or so after being made, a few weeks would make for a drink so dark and delicious, you will be glad you waited. This recipe will make about 6 cups, so buy your bottling supplies accordingly or make more than one batch.
Vodka Kahlua
4 cups Water (1 quart)
2 1/2 cups Sugar
3 tablespoons Instant coffee
1 tablespoon Vanilla Extract
2 1/2 cups Vodka
Bring water, sugar and coffee to a boil in a saucepan. Simmer VERY slowly for 3 hours. Mixture will be very dark and syrupy. Cool. Add vanilla and vodka.
Store in a glass bottle.
I hadn’t thought about homemade Kalua in years! My mom made it every Christmas to hand out as gifts to friends. Proportionally, she used way more sugar than this and more coffee as well. I’ve never made it myself, but perhaps this is the year to give it a try! Thanks for jogging my memory banks!

I remember so many gifts came from our kitchen. I’d like to return to those from the heart gifts again. Of all the Kalua recipes I have, this was the simplest.
