Tipsy Cow Chocolate Rum Milkshakes

Since today is National Rum Day, I thought it might be fun to do a little historical research on this sugar cane by-product. I guess I should have done my research prior to 2020, when America suddenly turned on its head about slavery, colonialism, and white privilege.

Fine, sugar canes was grown on Plantations in the Caribbean. I get that. So should we throw out our sugar today because of that associaton in the past? Cotton was a slave crop. Are cotton sheet a symbol of racism and bigotry? Should we all take our T-shirts out into the street and burn them in a sign of protest? No. Yet in an article published in a reputable magazine (a publicaton that is suppose to be all about food and wine) just this past year tells us about the nine things we should be aware of about Rum. In the very first paragraph, it corrects us if we think of Rum as part of the whole Jimmy Buffett beach bum scene. It’s true past is linked to colonialism, slavery, economic oppression and organized crime. It flows through the white politics of America. Fine. Throw out the rum, then. Oh wait, that’s just silly.

When it comes right down to the nuts and bolts of anything, there are dark aspects in its past. Slavery and oppression didn’t begin with the African slave trade and the founding of this country. The Jews were slaves in Egypt. The known world were slaves to the Romans, and so on and so forth. Yet from all of these countries and cultures are things we can appreciate, even today. Just because you sip a rum cocktail or wear cotton briefs does not make you an evil person. You are just somebody who knows what you like. Period.

And that’s my rant for today. After all, it’s National Rum Day. And have I got a treat for you! Recently a client of my husband’s company gave everyone some sprits. The company is a distillery and distribution center for alcoholic beverages. One of the bottles Hubby brought home was Tipsy Cow. It comes in a variety of flavors, including Chocolate Rum. We all took a shot to see what it was like. Yum! This belongs in a Milkshake. And so together, we created a recipe that is so yummy, you aren’t sure if this is a cocktail or dessert. Happy Rum Day!

Tipsy Cow Chocolate Rum Milkshakes
6 scoops Chocolate Ice Cream
3/4 cup Chocolate Rum
8 scoops Vanilla Bean Ice Cream
1/2 cup Milk
5 tablespoons Chocolate Syrup
2 tablespoons Bacardi Black Rum
Whipped Cream as desired
Crushed Oreo Cookies as desired

Place all the chocolate ice cream in a blender. Add chocolate rum, vanilla ice cream and milk. Blend for about 2 minutes. Add chocolate syrup and Bacardi. Blend until smooth, scraping down sides if necessary. Place blender in the freezer for 10 minutes to help thicken the shakes.

Pour into milkshake glasses. Top with whipped cream and some crushed cookies. Sip and enjoy!

Blessed be God, who fills my soul with fire
