My Inheritance

I’ve spent the better part of this morning doing all sorts of stuff to make room for my inheritance. While I could tell you about the wonderful things I’ve received, I think it would be best to just share the pictures.

My father has had a statue of our Blessed Mother at the farm for as long as I can remember. I told him when the time comes, that’s all I want. That and my Grandfather’s bible. On Saturday, while we were setting up for my sister’s Celebration of Life, Dad said he wanted me to take the statue home with me. She now has a new home in our backyard.

My sister, Ann was a very crafty soul. She did all sorts of things from woodwork to jewelry. Her husband, Donnie, brought down a few of her pieces to see if anyone had an interest in taking something to remember her by. Let me tell you, I jumped on that right quick.

In case you hadn’t notices; Hubby and I are into anything and everything Country, Texan, or Red White and Blue. It’s how we feel, how we live our lives. Straight forward and down to earth. While we live in a city (sort of) fifteen minutes north or east from our home and you are smack dab in cattle and farming country. Every time we take a drive out into the back country, and I see a Scottish Highlander, I tell Hubby that I want one. I tell him I’ll keep it in the backyard, and brush his hair and take him for walks. Hubby has put his foot firmly down more than once. (And yes, I know you cannot keep a 1,800 pound bull in the backyard). Ann made a welcome sign as something she had intended to sell at a craft fair. She and I never talked about my obsession with Highlanders. The moment I saw the Welcome Sign, it were as though my sister had somehow read my mind. So naturally I asked if I could take it. Then I saw the cowboys with the mountains and it made me think of horseback riding in Wyoming. My favorite thing to do – ride up along the eastern edge of Yellowstone early in the morning, just as the critters are starting to move. I really wanted that for so many reasons. Donnie said yes, I could have more than one thing to remember her by. It’s now hanging on the coat closet door, where I keep my leather fringe jacket to keep me warm on those early morning rides into the Rockies. Everyday I’ll see those cowboys and think of my sister and want to get on a horse and ride. Finally, there are the earrings my sister made – Dreamcatchers – just my style. What can I say sis, except we were cut from the same cloth.

These are the things that are truly priceless. Who could ask for more?

  1. What a wonderful inheritance! I love those earrings and share your fondness for highland cattle but quite understand why your hubby won’t let you have one in the back garden.
