Gotta Wonder Sometimes

Have you ever checked into a hotel, been shown your room and immediately wondered what were they thinking?

Hubby and I recently stayed at the Hilton Resort in Oxnard. Upon check in the staff of the reservation desk will proudly tell you that the hotel underwent extensive remodeling a few years back. It really is a lovely property right on the beach.

Still, you gotta wonder what in the world was the thought processes behind some of the remodeling and staging of the rooms?

The first thing I noticed was the artwork in the living area. To begin with, it’s a cheap print in a plain frame – not very attractive in the first place. And then you notice how it wase displayed. Can someone explain why you would stick a lamp and the TV in front of the the only picture in the room? I tried moving the TV just to give it more space – no help. The picture was mounted in a corner, blocked by the items on the dresser. They would have been better off with a mirror or even nothing at all than to do this.

Not that we stay in nice resorts to watch TV, but just for the record, you could only sit on one side of the sofa and still see the TV anyway. No, this needed to be on the wall where the sofa was, and the sofa moved to the opposite side of the room as a divider between the living and dining areas. That would have made sense, with a nice flow to the room.

It wasn’t until the following morning that I discovered this little gem. While Hubby was sleeping, I thought I’d make a cup of coffee to start my day out on the veranda. There was a wet bar in the dining area with a coffee maker. How convenient. Except the only plug for the coffee maker was on the other side of the sink. That’s what I wanted to do – run an electrical cord around the back side of a sink. Why not?

I’m sure a property like the Hilton hired professional designers and stagers for their remodle, so it does beg the question – what were they thinking?

One final thought on this particular property that we did not know before. It is a pet friendly resort. As in dogs of every size, shape and color are everywhere – including lounging around in the pool area and welcomed at outdoor dining choices. They bark, they growl, they howl at the moon. If that is not your cup of tea, I suggest you stay elsewhere.
