One of These is Not Like the Other

Welcome to another Catholic Friday. Okay, so it’s Friday for everyone on this side of the date line, not just a Friday for Catholics. Today isn’t just Friday, it’s Different Colored Eyes Day. It’s also a bunch of other things as well that we aren’t even going to talk about.

Some people have different colored eyes due to an illness that affects the iris, and changes the appearance of one eye. Some have suffered an injury that again changes the shape of the iris, thus changing the appearance. David Bowie is one example of an injured eye. The eye that appears darker is actually an enlargement of his iris. It’s a look he definitely capitalized on throughout his career. Especially when you consider all the superstitions surrounding people with two different colored eyes. Those who come by it naturally are the rarest breed of all. Perhaps they are the reason for all the superstition in the first place.

The most common conceptions surrounding people with two eye colors is that they can see things from a different perspective. This give a person a more open mind to accept different ways of thinking. Some believe they can see into the spiritual world through one eye, while viewing this existence through the other. Freaky. Some think it is the sign of a prophet, and the two colors are to help us recognize a true prophet. (Hum, and yet there is no mention of this among all the prophets found in the Bible.) Among some native American tribes, it is thought that when you were created, your original eyes were crushed as they were placed into the eye sockets. So the eyes were replaced with the eyes from two angels. This gives a person born with two different colored eyes the ability to interact with the spiritual world in ways the rest of us cannot.

There are those that believe if the color variation is a result of an injury, that person was spared blindness and instead was given the gift of seeing beauty everywhere. Ancient folklore also tells of multiple personalities or beings dwelling within a single body. The most common belief is that a person with two colored eyes, regardless of how it came to be, is a bridge between realms. It is even thought that these people are prized by evil spirits or demons since they can see both goodness and evil, so to win over such a person takes more than tricks.

I can tell you after spending over half my life living with someone who was born with two different eye shades, it does not give that person a more open mind as some think. As for the rest, who knows. When it comes to sickness or an injury, the change makes physical sense. The iris has changed. But when someone has two different colors without involving the iris, it’s a fluke. Doctors have a long-winded explanation that no one fully understands. All I know is that part of why I love Hubby so much is that his eyes are different. I think it’s sort of cool.

It’s summertime, and that means cooking up meals that are quick, light and yet delicious. It’s also Friday – so Fish it is!

Breaded Baked Italian Tilapia
3/4 cup Soft Breadcrumbs
1/3 cup Parmigiano Reggiano Cheese, grated
1 teaspoon Garlic Salt with Parsley
1 teaspoon Italian Seasoning
4 (4 oz) Tilapia Fillets

Heat oven to 425-degrees. Spray the rimmed baking sheet with cooking spray, set aside.

Trim crust from two slices of bread. Place in a food processor fitted with a blade. Pulse several times to create soft breadcrumbs.

Place breadcrumbs in a shallow bowl. Finely grate the cheese, add to the bread crumbs. Season with garlic salt and Italian seasoning. Toss to combine.

Coat fillets in the crumb mixture. Place on a wire rack for a few minutes for coating to adhere to the fish. . Arrange fish on the prepared baking sheet. Place in the heated oven.

Bake for 10 minutes or until fish flakes easily with a fork. Serve with a vegetable such as steamed green beans. A refreshing white wine is also a nice touch.

A clean heart create for me, O God,
and a steadfast spirit renew within me.
Cast me not out from Your presence,
and Your Holy Spirit take not from me.
