The Lord is perfect. Christ is both Lord and man. He has two natures, two sides. Within Him we often see the Godly reaction and the human reaction, especially during Holy Week as His time draws near.
Throughout scripture we see examples of Christ’s human side. Times of fear, times of sadness, and even struggles with anger. He told his followers to turn the other cheek, and yet on Holy Monday Jesus allowed the rage He felt rise up. The anger He felt was obvious to all. It momentarily took His followers off guard while adding fuel to the fire of those plotting against Hm.
Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling dove.
“It is written,” He said to them, “ ‘My house will be called a house of prayer’ but you are making it a ‘den of robbers.’ ”
The blind and the lame came to Him at the temple, and he healed them.
But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things He did and the children shouting in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant.
“Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked Him. “Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read, ‘From the lips of children and infants You, Lord, have called forth Your praise’?”
The Gospel of Matthew 21:12-16
His outburst of anger seems like such a contradiction to the kind, compassionate Christ who later that very day worked miracles for those seeking Him. So often we forget that Jesus was both man and God. God does not anger, but His human nature was capable of great anger. Once the anger subsided, we see forgiveness and compassion once again. While we should try to turn the other cheek, not let the transgressions of others rob us of our Christ-like compassion, Jesus knows fully well anger does happen. Just as forgivness is possible. The key to forgiveness is found in the Lord’s Prayer.
Forgive us our transgressions (our trespasses, our sins, our failings) just as we forgive others. No one can fully ask the Lord to forgive if we remain unwilling to forgive. He is willing and waiting. Are you?
