Before We Split

Did you know that today is National Banana Split Day? Yeah, like any of us need an excuse or National Day to treat ourselves to dessert!

Food is one of those things that I find fascinating. I get why we started barbecuing. Lightening struck or somehow a fire got started and some venison was roasted. People came along and gave it a taste. Not bad. But what about the rest? Why did we turn cow’s milk into ice cream or start churning butter for our bread? Who came up with the idea of bread in the first place? I still don’t understand the person who cracked open an oyster and said “Wow – snot – let’s gulp it down.” Yeah, I’ll eat a snail but I’m not sucking down an oyster even if you do give it some fancy name like Rockefeller.

Actually everything we have done since leaving the Garden is interesting. Clothes. Houses. Modes of transportation. Sure, we needed protection from the elements. But somewhere along the line it became more. In this modern age, I am so grateful to God for giving us a mind, an imagination and a curious nature.

Happy Banana Split Day to one and all. Remember to give praise to God, for He so loves us all.

Old-Time Boston Banana Split
1 Peach
3 Bananas
6 scoops Vanilla Ice Cream
6 Maraschino Cherries
Cherry Juice

Bring a pot of water to a full boil. Score the bottom of a beach several times. Submerge in the boiling water just long enough to loosen the skin without cooking the peach. Plunge peach in an ice bath to halt cooking.

Cut peach in half to remove the stone. Peel the peach, cut into wedges. Select the most attractive peach wedges for the split. Eat the rest of the peach as you make the banana splits.

Peel bananas, cut each banana in half lengthwise. Lay the bananas, cut side in, in Banana Split Boats. Place a peach wedge in the middle, creating two “compartments”. Place a scoop of ice cream on either side of the peach wedge.

For a traditional Old Fashion Boston Banana Split, top each scoop of ice cream with a cherry. Drizzle with a little cherry juice. That’s it.

Optional Modern Spin
Hot Fudge or Caramel Sauce
Whipped Cream
Crushed Nuts

For a modern take on the Peach-Banana Split, drizzle Hot Fudge or Warm Caramel Sauce over each scoop of ice cream, then top with whipped cream. Scatter nuts on top, finished with a cherry and a drizzle of juice.

Sing to the LORD a new song
of praise in the assembly of the faithful.
Let Israel be glad in their maker,
let the children of Zion rejoice in their king.
