Yummy National Sandwich Day

This worked out nicely – National Sandwich Day falling on a Friday. In this Old School Catholic Household, that can only mean Soup and Sandwich Day – providing neither contains meat.

Pray for The Souls Now Departed

So often, when someone passes away, we say things like “You’ll see them again in Heaven” or “You know they are looking down on you.” These are comforting thoughts. I’ve said these same things. My mother, my brother, my daughter and now my sister are no longer with us. In my mind, I see them all together again in Heaven.

All Saints and a Pork Tenderloin Supper

As Hubby and I changed into our Halloween Costumes, I reminded him that November 1 we needed to attend Mass. It was an obligation outside of Sundays. Even to the non-believer, the fact that Sundays, all Sundays throughout the year, are deemed Holy Days of Obligation comes as no surprise. The faithful are expected to attend Mass. There is no need to explain why.

A Feast for Two Apostles

While I realize that the true focus of Christian Faith must always be on Jesus Christ, I do wish we knew more about the Apostles. Each was chosen by Jesus for a particular reason. If we knew more about them, perhaps we might understand better why each was selected. What did they have to offer? And we just might be able to see a bit of ourselves in them.

Seeing God’s Hand in Life

Today’s recipe is one of those recipes that kept getting moved around and pushed back. First it was obligations to our parish. If you have ever been involved in a church project, you know how it can grow and take on a life all its own.

Miracle of the Spinning Sun and Friday’s Kabobs

A very long time ago, someone once asked me why Catholic? What was it about the Catholic faith that drew me to it. This was a friend, who knew I was a cradle Catholic, but that I had left the Church for a while, exploring other Christian denominations as well as Judaism.

Beautiful Lady of the Rosary

Today is the Feast Day of Our Lady of the Rosary or Our Lady of Victory as this feast day marks the defeat of the Turkish Ottoman Empire by the Holy League at the Battle of Lepanto in the Gulf of Patras on October 7, 1571. It was a battle that the League should have lost.

Prayer of Saint Francis

Our parish was truly blessed for a while by a young man named Michael who provided the musical accompaniments during our early morning Sunday Mass. He played both the organ and the piano. While not always perfect, his voice is that of an angel from above.

A Guardian Angle Inspired Dessert

We could spend a lifetime studying Catholic teachings on the subject of Angels and Guardian Angels. Saints have written volumes on the subject, as have Doctors of the Church and Theologians. Angels appear in both Old and New Testament, the bases and inspiration behind all these writings.

A Feast of the Archangels

Early in the Feast Days of the Church, the most well-known Archangels each had their own feast day. Archangel Saint Gabriel was March 24, Archangel Saint Michael was September 29 and Archangel Saint Raphael was October 24.

Here’s To Celebrating National Days

Having a National This or That Day for every single day throughout the year is helpful when planning all sorts of things from family dinners to outings and events. Things like National Beach Day to promote cleaning up our beaches at the end of summer or Earth Day as a great day to plant the family garden are examples.

Ember Days of Autumn and a Country Rib Supper

Today is the third and final Ember Days of the 2022-2023 Church Year. With the first Sunday of Advent, the cycle will begin again for the new Church Year. These Ember Days were once observed throughout the Universal Church.

An Ember Days Friday in Autumn

Hello Autumn! Have I mentioned that this is, hands down, my favorite season of all? While I love Christmas and Easter, when it comes to embracing life, there is nothing like fall. All those beautiful colors, the pleasant days and crisp nights – nothing else can come close.

A Different Sort of Matthew

Unless you have been living under a rock somewhere, you’re probably familiar with the Christian series, The Chosen. It began as a whisper, and has grown into something else entirely. I’m not sure what, the verdict is still out on that one for me.

Ravioli and the First Ember Days of Autumn

On Thursday of last week, we celebrated the Feast of the Holy Cross. Once upon a time, that feast day would signal the coming of three days of Thanksgiving to God for His seasonal blessings. Ember Days of Autumn, the last of these days, is celebrated the first Wednesday after Holy Cross.
