Break Out Those Bread Pans!

As some of you may know, things in America are a little crazy. I don’t know about the rest of the world’s Toilet Paper and non-perishable food supply, but here we have officially lost our minds.

Just the other day, on my Facebook page I suggested to my friends and family that since many of us are experiencing a shelter-in-place existence (don’t leave your home except for medical reasons or trips to the grocery store), now would be a great time to take up a productive hobby. While I had expected a run on canned goods, I was surprised to see that bread was gone from the shelves. Not all bread, the take-and-bake gotta slice it yourself loaves were still there. But no sandwich bread or rolls or buns of any kind. Wow. Not that it matters, lunch meats are gone, too. I guess with schools closed, kids will be having lunch at home. Which is another thing I find strange. When Kiddo was a Kiddo, we packed a lunch so it really didn’t matter if he were at school or at home, it was the same lunch.

Anyhow, when I made the remark about baking, I heard from my sister and several others that yeast was hard to come by. I guess with the bread run, those that baked were already stocking up on supplies. Flour is another hit and miss. Thank goodness, I have all-purpose and cake and self-rising and bread flours. What I didn’t have was the yeast.

And that’s when the light came on – beer bread doesn’t need yeast – the yeast is already in the beer. The real trick here is to remember to put the beer in the bread and not in your glass.

Easy Beer Bread
1/2 cup Butter
3 cups Self-Rising Flour (see note)
1/4 cup Sugar
12 oz Beer, can or bottle

Note: If using all-purpose flour, sift 3 tablespoons of baking powder and 1 teaspoon of salt into the flour before mixing with beer.

Heat oven to 375 degrees. Spray a loaf pan with cooking spray, set aside. Melt butter, set aside.

In a bowl mix flour with beer. Pour batter into the prepared loaf pan. Drizzle melted butter over the bread dough.

Bake in the heated oven for 1 hour. Once baked, immediately remove loaf from pan. Let cool for 15 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with sweet butter.

  1. It’s crazy here too. Everyone is preparing for lockdown so the supermarkets have been wiped. Thankfully I’ve always been a bit of a prepper so whilst the whole brexit situation was going on I laid by loads of stuff. I am also baking bread and trying out a slow cooker version someone had suggested.
