Junk Food Inspired Square Burgers

Today is National Junk Food Day. While we’ve talked a lot in the past about junk food, I have yet to share what can truly be a junk-food-recipes. Junk foods, by definition, typically contain high fats, sugars, salt, and calories. Most importantly, junk food contains little to no nutritional value. Hence Junk.

In the past we’ve shared a Death by Chocolate Mousse Pie for junk food day. I know, Chocolate Mousse isn’t exactly junk food. But if the point of Junk Food Day is to not eat healthy foods, then I’d say something as sinfully bad as Chocolate Mousse should count. We’ve also had Cajun Chicken BLT Sandwiches. Hey, it has bacon on it, and the chicken is fried so again not exactly healthy.

Today we’re getting a little closer to the mainstream thoughts on Junk Food. This is fast-food inspired. And let’s face it, fast food is about as junkie as you can get. Enjoy!

Texas Toast Square Burgers
1 large Yellow Onion
2 tablespoons Butter
1-1/3 Ground Sirloin
Salt to taste
Black Pepper to taste
8 slices Texas Toast
4 tablespoons Butter, divided
8 tablespoons Mayonnaise
4 slices Pepper Jack Cheese

Peel and thinly slice the onion. Heat butter skillet over medium-low heat. Grill onion slices, turning as needed, until nicely caramelized, about 20 minutes.

Divide ground meat into 4 Third-pound burgers. Form square patties that are just a little larger than the Texas Toast. Season with salt and pepper, set aside until ready to cook.

Heat a griddle to medium, about 325-degrees. Add burger squares and grill about 4 or 5 minutes per side.

Once burgers are cooked to desired doneness, top with slices of cheese and caramelized onions.

Butter Texas Toast. Place 4 slices of bread, buttered side down, on the griddle. Spread mayonnaise over the toast. Top with a square burger. Spread mayonnaise on the unbuttered side of remaining toast, place on top of the burgers, mayo side down.

Remove from griddle, cut diagonally for easy eating. Serve with tater tots and enjoy.
