A Guardian Angle Inspired Dessert

We could spend a lifetime studying Catholic teachings on the subject of Angels and Guardian Angels. Saints have written volumes on the subject, as have Doctors of the Church and Theologians. Angels appear in both Old and New Testament, the bases and inspiration behind all these writings.

Most people today believe in the concept of angels, and in particular guardian angels. This is true even for people who profess not to believe in God. That is something I cannot grasp. How is it possible to believe in angels but not in the creator of all that is, was and ever shall be? Did angels evolve from pond scum invisibly? Or cosmic dust? What?

There are those who readily accept the idea of angels, but reject the idea of demons. What are demons but angels who have chosen to follow Lucifer into hell? Like people, angels have free will. We can chose to be good, to follow the will of God, to care for others more than we care for ourselves. Or we can chose greed, self-gratification, self-importance, vanity and a whole host of other indulgences that slowly corrupt our soul. Sin is like a cancer that can spread until there is nothing left to salvage. God’s grace, His forgiveness is the only cure that will save our eternal existence. Just as Lucifer sends his demons to whisper and temp you, God sends angels to light the way. It’s really up to us.

Often as children, we prayed to our guardian angels as a part of a morning or bedtime routine. Sometimes these prayers are direct, sometimes indirect.

Angel of God, my guardian dear,
To whom God’s love commits me here,
Ever this day be at my side,
To light, to guard, to rule and guide.

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
But if I die before I wake
I pray the Lord my soul to take

As adults, we don’t typically recite the prayers we did as children, if we pray at all. It a way it’s sad because our wide eyed innocents has gotten lost along the way. While I don’t always remember to pray first thing in the morning, in such a rush to get my guys out the door and to begin my day, at some point each morning, I take a moment to kiss the Crucifix I wear around my neck and to say a quick prayer.

(Sign of the Cross)
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit
Heavenly Father, I offer up this day to You
And ask that You guide my every step
To always and forever surrender to Your will
In Christ’s name, I pray.
Amen.

Today we celebrate the Feast of Guardian Angels. Such a heavenly inspired day deserves a heavenly inspired dessert. Enjoy and be glad, for God loves you.

Heaven Sent Angel Food Cake Dessert
1 pint Strawberries
1 cup Blueberries
2 cups Heavy Cream
2 tablespoons Grand Marnier
1/4 cup Powdered Sugar
1 round Angel Food Cake from the bakery

Rinse berries well, let dry on paper towels before using. Chill the bowl of a stand mixer and whisk attachment in the freezer for 20 minutes. Make sure heavy cream is well-chilled in the refrigerator.

Whip heavy cream to the soft peak stage. Add Grand Marnier and Powdered Sugar. Whip until stiff peaks form. Set aside.

With a serrated knife, cut cake to create 2 layers. Place the bottom layer on a footed cake plate. Spread about a quarter of the whipped cream over the top. Place remaining cake on top. Pile on the remaining whipped cream. Garnish the cake with fresh berries and serve.

The Lord will build up Zion again, and appear in all His glory
