Acts of Kindness and an Old Style Breakfast

The Lenten Season is one of those moveable Seasons within the Church. It’s always in the spring and always begins 40 days before Easter (not counting Sundays, which another whole story). Since Easter is a moveable feast day, Lent moves with it.

Easter is based on the cycle of the moon. Officially established by the Council of Nicaea (325); Easter occurs on the first Sunday following the first fool moon after the spring equinox. This year the spring equinox is March 19, the first full moon after that date is March 25. The first Sunday after that is March 31 – Easter Sunday for 2024. Yeah, that’s a lot of math and star charts and such. It’s why we rely on Calendars that include religious holidays.

Hum, I didn’t mean to imply that Easter was established by the Council of Nicaea – only that the agreed date to celebrate Easter was. Easter itself was, is, and always shall be established by Christ.

You are probably wondering where I’m going with all of this. Today is National Acts of Kindness Day. As the cycle of the moon, and Easter and Lent circle about, today happens to coincide with the first Saturday following Ash Wednesday. Simply put, this year the act of being kind can be included in our Lenten observations. Although if you were to ask me, I think being kind should be as natural as breathing. Unfortunately, not everyone is kind. I believe, if you dig deep enough, those with a mean streak feel wounded; ignored or misunderstood. Regardless of the reason, there is pain. Be kind, even when others are not. Let your kindness and compassion be the ripple across the universe. If kindness is old fashion, that’s all right by me. I can think of a lot of good things that are old fashion – like breakfast! And while the recipe says to cook up in a skillet, I like my griddle just fine. For the tart jelly or jam, I went with a Cabernet Wine Jelly.

Old-Fashion 1950s Style French Toast Breakfast
3/4 cup fresh Milk
3 fresh Eggs
1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
6 slices Day-old Bread
6 tablespoons Tart Jelly or Jam (optional)

In a shallow pan, lightly beat eggs. Beat in the milk and vanilla.

Dip day-old bread into the mixture. Fry in a skillet with a small amount of fat.

Serve hot with jelly or jam as desired.

Teach me Your way, O Lord, that I may walk in Your truth
