Recently Hubby and I watched The Jesus Revolution, a 2023 American Christian drama based on a movement that took place in the late 1960s in California. Having felt the impact of the whole Flower Child phenomenon touch my life, I was very much drawn to the subject matter.
This movie did not fail to tantalize my thoughts. As a former Hippie (which really isn’t accurate – there is a sense of compassion and love for all of humanity that remains within you forever), I hold a soft spot for anything Flower-Child San Francisco related.
The message that came out of the film was simple, and remains relevant even today. In the 1960s there was a restlessness within the youth fueled by a need to go in search of “truth”. Drugs, while claiming to expand the mind and allow truth to reveal itself wasn’t the answer. No, while it might sound very “square” to say this, drugs and alcohol are the tools of the Devil. (And yes, he is very much real). When people say they are searching for truth and “enlighten” what they are really responding to is a longing within them to be connected to God through faith. Since the beginning of time, God has whispered to our souls, calling us home again. When we don’t know where to turn, the devil and his demons are more than happy to point us in the wrong direction. It is a deception presented in mind-numbing substances such as drugs and alcohol; to all sorts of pleasures of the flesh and even the acceptance of false gods that only serve to temporarily distract us from real truth. We are in a war. Many a good but lost person knows the walk of shame, waking up in a strange bed after a night of carousing only to feel even more empty and alone than before. There is nothing intimately satisfying about sex without an emotional connection. While physically it feels great, emotionally there is a hole inside your soul that a truck could drive through. The greatest weapons we have at our disposal is prayer.
Griddle Orange Zest French Toast
8 tablespoons Butter
1 Orange for zesting
1/2 cup Orange Juice
1/2 cup Milk
3 tablespoons Ultra-Fine Bakers Sugar
1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
2 tablespoons Grand Marnier
3 Eggs
10 slices Texas Toast
Powdered Sugar for dusting
Heat griddle to medium heat, about 325-degrees. Melt butter, zest orange, then peel and break into wedges. Set aside.

In a large, shallow bowl, using an electric whisk, blend together, orange juice, milk, sugar, nutmeg, vanilla, orange zest and Grand Marnier.

In a small mixing bowl, using an electric whisk, whip eggs with the melted butter until well blended, smooth and pale in color. Pour eggs into milk mixture, whisk to blend.

Cut bread slices diagonally. Dip in batter, allowing bread to soak in flavors without becoming soggy. Cook on griddle until golden brown, about 5 minutes. Turn and continue cooking an additional 3-5 minutes. Drizzle with melted butter. Transfer toast to plates, dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with syrup and serve with orange slices on the side.

Serve with Vermont Maple Sausage Links, fresh brewed coffee and orange juice for a beautiful breakfast feast.

God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ,
And entrusting to us the message of reconciliation
Hold the sausages, I’ll have more of that delicious French toast.
