San Antonio’s Market Square

A short 7-mile drive west from the Alamo is another famous San Antonio attraction. It has gone by different names over the years since its inception in 1938. Today locals and tourists alike simply call it Market Square.

The square encompasses a three-block outdoor plaza lined with shops and restaurants in downtown San Antonio. It’s claim to fame is that it is the largest Mexican Market in the United States. Places such as Mi Tierre Café Y Banaderia is busy no matter when you come. A typical wait for a table can be anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. But those in the know will tell you the food is worth the wait.

The El Mercado section has 32 specialty shops in a long warehouse like building that lines the plaza. The Farmer’s Market Place is home to another 80 shops. It is at the Market Square that the biggest Cinco de Mayo celebration is held each year as well as other fiestas important to the Mexican Community. You can easily get lost just wandering about.
