Have you ever watched the TV show Bull; loosely inspired by Dr. Phil before becoming a TV personality? Dr. Phil was a trial consultant early on in his career and founded Courtroom Sciences, Inc. the inspiration for Bull.
Now I bring this up because Hubby and I happened to catch an episode recently on the never-ending loop of TV reruns. The character Bull (played by former NCIS actor Michael Weatherly) instructed his associate to pose a question before a mock jury – is a hot dog a sandwich? Well, is it? Just what constitutes a sandwich? Are there culinary rules in place?
The debate over whether a hot dog is a sandwich has been raging since the invention of the Sandwich came into existence. The fact that hot dogs, or rather the sausage, has been around since 1484 while the sandwich didn’t exist before 1760 should settle the dispute – Hot Dogs are not a sandwich.
All this has very little to do with today’s recipe, but wasn’t it fun anyway? Today is National Sandwich Day. And my second most favorite sandwich might just be a French Dip.
French Dip Sandwiches with Au Jus
1/2 Yellow Onion
1 cup grated Truffle Gouda Cheese
Parsley, optional for color
Splash White Wine
2 (10 oz) cans Beef Consommé
16 oz sliced Deli Roast Beef
Montreal Steak Seasoning to taste
6 Torpedo Rolls
2 tablespoons Butter
Cut onion in half from root to tip. Reserve half for another purpose. Peel and slice remaining half paper-thin. Grate or slice cheese as desired. Snip parsley if using. Set aside.
In a sauce pan warm Beef Consommé with just a splash of wine. While the Consommé warms heat oven to 325-degrees and line a rimmed baking sheet with foil.
Spread roast beef out in the prepared pan. Scatter onions over the roast beef. Season everything with Montreal Steak Seasoning. Drizzle abut a quarter cup of warm Consommé over the seasoned meat. Toss to blend and coat. Place pan in the heated oven to warm, about 8 minutes or so.
Split rolls open, lightly butter. Once the roast beef is warm, fill the rolls. Top with Truffle Cheese. Remove foil from the baking sheet, arrange filled sandwich rolls on the pan. Place in the still warm oven just long enough for the bread to toast lightly and the cheese to melt. If using, garnish with snipped parsley for extra color.
Pour warmed Beef Consommé into ramekins and serve with the warm, toasty French Dip Sandwiches.

All the ends of the earth
shall remember and turn to the LORD;
All the families of the nations
shall bow down before him.
