Today we celebrate the feast day of two of Christ’s Chosen apostles. Why are these two men remembered together? The obvious answer would be that they were both Apostles. If that were the case, why not have a feast day for all twelve and be done with it?

Before Dallas Jenkins gave us The Chosen, I never really paid much attention to the Apostles. I knew Christ selected twelve men for very specific tasks within His ministry. Even Judas was chosen for the very reason of betrayal. While that offends most Christians, the reality is without his betrayal, there would be no redemption.

Today we celebrate the Feast Day of two Apostles, Saint Philip and Saint James the Lesser. Often Saint James is called the brother of our Lord in Protestant teachings, but not in Catholic tradition. The confusion, according to the Catholic Church, stems from the fact that James’ mother was either a sister or close relative of the Blessed Virgin, and for that reason, according to Jewish custom, he was called the brother of Jesus.
