Today we celebrate the great state of West Virginia. West Virginia, forged from a slave state in order to stay loyal to the Union. That’s a bit of American history most of us are familiar with.

Savor West Virginia
Who remembers the Cold War and the idea of fallout shelters? I can remember as a child seeing the symbols posted inside public build indicating where the shelters might be located. I made mental notes as to their locations, although getting from our home in the country to a downtown building in the city would have been out of the question on my own. After all, I was just a child.

Today is National West Virginia Day. When the state of Virginia voted to secede from the Union, Western Virginia clung to their Union loyalties. Those folks created their own constitution apart from Virginia and approached Congress for statehood. West Virginia became the 35th state in the Union, joining as its own entity in 1863.
