Simple Garlic Broccoli Bursting with Green Goodness

Did you know that California produces 90% of the Broccoli grown in the United States, followed by Arizona? I’m not surprised about California. While the rest of the world might think LA and Hollywood when picturing the Golden State, those of us who call California home know there’s a lot of rich land. Farming and ranching are a big deal in California. We are so much more than Napa Valley Wines.

We grown lettuce, and peaches and strawberries. We celibate the blossoms of Almonds and Artichokes. Californians loves to celebrate our rich agricultural heritage. Our festivals are known to attract visitors from far and wide. Greenfield, California was once billed as the Broccoli Capital of the world. They once celebrated their claim to fame with a Broccoli Festival in October. For whatever reason, the big Broccoli Party is no more. While still observed to some degree, it is a community event today and not a huge festival like the Artichoke Festival in nearby Monterey. The road sign pointing the way to the Broccoli Festival has long since faded away.

I love broccoli. Most people say it smells funny. To me, it smells healthy. It smells green. And green is good, right?

Simple Garlic Broccoli
6 cups fresh Broccoli Florets (about 1 1/4 lbs)
3 Garlic Cloves, minced
1 1/2 tablespoons Olive Oil
1/2 teaspoon Tuscan Italian Seasoning Blend
1 pinch Sea Salt
1 pinch Cayenne Pepper

In a Dutch oven, bring 1/2-inch of water to a boil. Add the broccolie, cover and cook for about 3 to 4 minutes or until the broccoli is crisp-tender. Drain water from the pan.

While the water is coming to a boil and the broccoli is cooking, peel and finely mince the garlic cloves, set aside until ready to use.

Once the broccoli is tender, add minced garlic and olive oil to the broccoli. Toss to coat well. Season with Tuscan Seasoning Blend, salt and a little cayenne pepper. Toss and warm gently over low heat.

Transfer to a serving bowl and enjoy.
