Here it is day 14 of our insane road trip. It was over 2,500 miles just to reach our destination – Tennessee. Hubby estimated that we put on another 1,000 miles or so exploring Tennessee. Wanting to avoid retracing our journey out, the return trip took us 500 miles deeper into the south.
So often we make foolish decisions when it comes to travel. In Barstow, we said it’s only for one night, how bad can a Motel 6 be? (Try sleeping in a concrete slap at the end of a 500-mile drive). Unfortunately on the first leg of our return trip, we repeated that same mistake, opting for another Motel 6 in Mississippi. Why not cancel? Motel 6 require a payment upfront.
Having traveled clear across the country, here’s what I’ve learned thus far – you get what you pay for. Holiday Inn and Suites or Comfort Inns are not the top of the hotel chain, but they do offer a great deal to their guests. The lobbies are warm and inviting. The rooms spacious and comfortable. They have working elevators (believe me, that matters at the end of the day) and breakfast the following morning. All things that matter more than you realize.

Today’s journey takes us from the Gulf region of Texas inland toward Houston (and it’s massive traffic) before pushing on to San Antonio and the Alamo. Texas is a massive state, with ever changing landscape. There are deserts, flat grass lands, and rolling hills. Small towns, oil fields and big cities. Texas could easily be a country all its own. One filled with big Texas size attitude.

Say what you want about Red Cities and Blue Cities. Homeless and poverty is a global problem. Jesus once said the poor would always be among us. I don’t think He meant so do nothing. No, let the poor move our hearts with compassion. If not, we have truly lost our humanity.

For there but by the grace of God go I.
Unfortunately, there are homeless people everywhere who need our help.
