Our Penance is Nearly Over

Today marks the 5th and final Friday of the Lenten Season. While Lent itself does not end until Holy Thursday, there are no more Lenten Fridays to speak of. Next Friday is Good Friday. It is not a part of the Lenten Season, but rather within the Holy Triduum, the shortest of all Liturgical Seasons.

More Than Just a Lenten Friday

Today marks the 4th Friday of this year’s Lenten Season. Lent is always important in the preparation for Easter and all the joy of the season to come. Today also happens to mark a milestone of sorts in my blogging journey. This post represents five consecutive years of sharing something. Five years of uninterrupted writing.

Another Friday the 13th

Did you know in Medieval Times it was said that a ladder resembled the gallows? Walking under a ladder was bad luck because you had sealed your fate -and you would die by hanging.

Making Lent Count

Years ago, when Kiddo was a kid, our church has a wonderful “Tradition” during the Lenten Season. Most of us know the story of Christ crowned with thorns on that first Good Friday. This Crown of Thorns might not be accurate, but it’s meaning is.

Honoring Jewish Roots

Today is the 5th Friday of Lent. Sunday we will begin the journey of Holy Week. So often we forget to honor the roots of our Christian Faith; Judaism. Christ was a Jew. Without the Jewish people and their relationship to the Lord, none of us are saved. It’s that simple.

O To the Stick!

An Alternative to Crunchy Taco Day

Today is National Crunchy Taco Day. Now I love chunchy tacos as much as the next guy. What I love more than the crack of a taco shell is the challange of eating a tostada without getting everying down the front of my blouse.

Friday of Ash Wednesday Week

I know what you are thinking, isn’t this the first Friday of Lent? I used to make that very same mistake. I mean if Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, then this must be the first Friday, right?

Welcome to the Last Lenten Friday

Today is the last Friday of the Lenten Season. While some people count Good Friday as the last Friday of the season, actually it’s not. The Lenten Season ends with the evening Mass of Holy Thursday. It is the Lord’s Supper, and it ushers in the Holy Triduum. More on that later.

Celebrating Oregon on This Lenten Friday

It’s been a while now since we vacationed in Oregon. The Oregon Coast is one of my favorite places to spend time. I had even considered retiring in the Pacific Northwest. But then that was before.

A Lenten Friday in Minnesota

Today is the 2nd Friday of the Lenten Season; or the 3rd Friday since Ash Wednesday. Whatever else might be going on today, for Catholics throughout the world, our attention is focused on Christ’s sacrifice for the forgiveness of sin.

Ember Days Lenten Friday

Today is the second Friday following Ash Wednesday, but the 1st Friday of Lent. It has something to do with Sundays as the start of the week, so the 1st Friday isn’t counted the same as all the other Fridays.

Friday after Ash Wednesday Fish Fry

You would think today would be the first Friday of Lent, since Lent began on Ash Wednesday. But it’s not. Next Friday is the 1st Friday of Lent. Today is the Friday After Ash Wednesday. Don’t ask, I haven’t an answer.

Sixth Friday of Lent and a Cajun Fish Supper

O my Jesus, on this the last Friday of the Lenten Season
As we prepare ourselves for the Most Holy Week
I surrender myself to You and to Your will in all things.
Amen.

The 5th Friday of Lent and Shrimp Bisque

There are certain things I can recall so vividly – such as the first time I ever tasted a Bisque Soup. It was at a very upscale restaurant in San Francisco that, sadly for now, is closed for business.
