Of all the Holy Days to honor our Blessed Mother Mary, this day means the most to me personally. It was 5 years ago today, on the Holy Feast of the Assumption of Mary into heaven that my baby girl was called to her final rest.

A Day of Mixed Emotions

Four years ago today our daughter passed from this life. It was a blessing in many ways. She struggled with addiction. God said enough, My child – it’s time to rest.

The Assumption of Mary

Today is the Feast Day of the Assumption of Mary into heaven. There is a certain personal comfort in what this day represents to the Church. It is a Holy Day of Oblation. Simply put, this a day when the faithful are required to attend Mass.

Feast of the Assumption of Mary

Within the Universal Catholic Church worldwide, there are 10 Holy Days of Obligation to attend Mass in addition to Sunday worship. However; in 1991 the Bishops of the United States petitioned the Holy See, and were granted the removal of three of the Universal Holy Days of Obligation and to transfer the celebration of the Epiphany (January 6) to the nearest Sunday.

Hail Mary, Our Risen Heavenly Mother

As many of you know by now, I am a cradle Catholic. To be a cradle Catholic means I did not convert to the faith, but was born to the faith, having been baptized as a baby. As Catholics, we believe our faith is handed down not only through Sacred Scripture (the Holy Bible) but also through Sacred Traditions. One such tradition is the Assumption of Mary.

Assumption and A Tart Fruit Pie

According to Catholic Teaching, at the end of her earthly life, Our Blessed Mother Mary was assumed, body and soul, to Heaven. Catholics worldwide celebrate the Feast of Assumption on August 15. It is a Holy Days of Obligation, one of five or six (depending upon the calendar) throughout the year in addition to Holy Sundays. The Feast of the Assumption is a public holiday in 43 different predominantly Catholic countries.
