Feast of Saint Thomas, the Apostle

Today is the Feast Day of Saint Thomas, the Apostle. He was one of the twelve chosen by Christ. And yet Thomas seems to get the short end of the stick so often. Doubting Thomas. Demanding proof with his own eyes before believing.

July’s Most Precious Blood

Within the Catholic Faith, each month has a special dedication to a different doctrine of faith. This is different from the Church Liturgical Calendar. The Liturgical Calendar does not begin on January 1 and end the last day in December. It begins with Advent. It ends the Saturday following Christ the King.

The Feast of Two Saintly Men

Today is the Feast Day of two pillars of the Christian Faith. It is the Feast Day of Saints Peter (Simon) and Paul (Saul). Saint Peter was the rock on which Christ built his church. Saint Paul was instrumental in bringing the faith to the Gentiles.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Pray for Me

Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. This is one of those special days that is not found in scripture or in a vision but comes instead from another aspect of the Catholic Faith – oral tradition. The Church is rich in oral tradition.

Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord

It’s easy to overlook God’s plan once the road to salvation has been revealed. Yet even before Eve gave Adam the apple to eat, God had a plan. Man’s fall from grace did not come as a surprise. It came as a consequence of man’s free will.

Saint Barnabas, the Nearly Forgotten Apostile

Today the Catholic Church celebrates the memory of Saint Barnabas. Although considered an apostle father and missionary, he was not one of the original twelve chosen by the Lord, Jesus. Traditionally he is counted as one of the 72 disciples and among the most respected in the first century Church.

Mary’s Heart Most Pure

Immediately following the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Church celebrates the Immaculate Heart of Mary. These are two vastly different celebrations. So often non-Catholics are confused by the way Catholics hold Mary in such high regard. She is not to be worships, but rather to be admired and emulated.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus

The Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus – also the World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests – is celebrated on the Friday after the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. This suggests to us that the Eucharist (Corpus Christi) is none other than the Heart of Jesus himself.

The Comfort of Cousinly Love

Of all the Marian Feasts throughout the year, this is by far the most personal to me if for no other reason than the connection of cousins. Elizabeth and Mary were cousins. John and Jesus were cousins. I grew up with cousins. They are as much my siblings as my brother and sisters are. It’s a connection I understand.

Corpus Christi Thursday

Traditionally the Feast of Corpus Christi is held on the second Thrusday following Pentecost Sunday. However; many Bishops have elected to celebrate the Mass on the Second Saturday instead.

Blessed Be Trinity Sunday

Today we celebrate Trinity Sunday within the Church. As is my custom, I’ve gone back over the last three years and re-read those posts dealing with Trinity Sunday. After all, I need to express its meaning without sounding like a broken record.

The Last Ember Days of Pentecost

Here we are at the last Saturday of May. For many of us this is a part of a long weekend. As often in the case of long weekends, our family gathers on Sunday to celebrate together. It’s a nice way to break up the long weekend. This year is a little different, but we’ll chat about that later.

Friday’s Ember Days of Pentecost

Today is both the second Ember Days of Pentecost and National Wyoming Day. As the second Ember Days of Pentecost, it naturally falls on a Friday. In our house, that means no meat.

Welcome the First Ember Days of Pentecost

Coming up with recipes to share day after day ain’t easy. Thank God for my compulsive nature and that I have 196 cookbooks in my collection thus far. The oldest is from 1899; the most recent was a gift from Kiddo for Mother’s Day.

Holy Mary, Mother

When you consider the life span of the Church, under the direction of the First Pope, Peter, appointed by Christ, we’ve been here a very long time. From that perspective, a Devotional Feast Day proclaiming Mary, Mother of the Church is very new indeed, having been established in 2018.
