Respecting Our Parents

The very idea that someone out there felt the need to create a National Respect For Parents Day is a very sad commentary on the state of our society. Yet here we are.

Saint Ignatius and the Jesuits

Today we celebrate the Memorial of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Priest and founder of the Jesuits. Saint Ignatius was not a saint I was familiar with, so I went in search of information.

It’s a Tuesday Alright!

Tuesdays in general mean just one thing in my house – and that’s something wonderful with a Mexican influence. Be it Taco Tuesday or Spicy Lasagna, just bring on those Mexican flavors all the way. Today is also National Cheesecake Day.

Make the Most of Monday

One thing I’ve got to say about the Catholic Church is that we are reminded through memorials, and special feasts that each of us was created for a purpose. Sainthood is the ultimate goal of every Catholic. Saints are not perfect, but they do place God above all else.

So Happy It’s Parents Day

On the National front, the 28th day of July has much to celebrate. It’s Buffalo Soldier Day and Milk Chocolate Day. It’s also the 4th Sunday of this month. And that makes it all the more special as we celebrate Parents Day.

Get Along Little Doggie

Welcome to the 4th Saturday of July. If you’ve been around a while, you know that today is National Cowboy Day. Cowboys are near and dear to my heart. As are country folks.

A Memorial Feast for Mary’s Parents

It’s strange to think of God as having a family history. Yet He does. He came down from Heaven and became man – Jesus Christ. His mother, Mary also had parents. They were His earthly grandparents. Let that sink in for a moment.

A Feast for a Son of Thunder

I remember reading once that Christ changed people’s names because He could, that it somehow was a part of His Holy Divinity. They compared this to God of the Old Testement. Abram became Abraham, Sarai became Sarah and Jacob became Israel. These were done for various reasons by God Himself.

Drive Thru Tequila Day

Every year on the 24th day of July, I cannot help but to chuckle. Two National Days come together. Drive Thru Day and Tequila Day. Not exactly the most prudent of combination.

Vanilla Ice Cream? How Boring!

Today is National Vanilla Ice Cream Day. I will be honest, my original plan for today was to ignore the National Day completely. But then a light came on. Don’t you just love it when that happens?

Who Was This Woman Mary?

Hollywood and the whole of the entertainment industry has always been given certain creative licensing. They are masters at weave shimmering threads of speculation into an otherwise gray tapestry of fact.

Is This Really Junk Food?

Today we celebrate Junk Food Day, as we have a few times in the past now. Of our four chats regarding junk food, half have involved beefy burgers, and three of the four were served on bread or a bun. That just leaves one Junk Food Day that wasn’t really about Junk Food as we typically think.

Greetings Pennsylvania

If I had to pick another place and time to have been alive, I would be torn between two. The first is the American Civil War. The second are the days leading up to World War II. While I realize that I view these moments in history through rose-colored glasses, I cannot help but to be drawn to them.

Love Those Catholic Friday Suppers!

One thing is for sure, I love being a Catholic. When people talk about the idea of separation of Church and State, that our elected officials need to park their faith at the door, it just never made much sense to me. It’s not like a jacket that I can take off when I go indoors. Faith is a part of your being. Or at lease it should be.

Keeping Thursday Casual

Casual. The whole point of today’s post was how to keep things around the dinner table casual. That is until I came across a photo taken 30 years ago today. I knew today’s post needed to go in another direction.
