The Apostles Simon and Jude

Today is the Feast Day of Simon the Zealot and Jude the Apostle. They share a feast day not because they died together, but because in life they are often associated as an evangelizing team. The most widespread tradition is that first Simon evangelized in Egypt, then joined Jude in proclaiming the Good News throughout Persia and the surrounding areas.

One Spicy Friday Night

Today is one of those fun, unhealthy National Days. It’s Breadstick Day and Greasy Food Day. When it comes to breads of any kind, I am in diner’s heaven. Unfortunately, as a diabetic watching what’s left of my figure, bread is not my friend.

Saint Raphael Archangel

Raphael the Archangel is recognized in all three major religions of the world. He is mentioned by name in the Book of Tobit and 1 Enoch. Jewish tradition tells us Raphael was one of three heavenly visitors entertained by Abraham at the Oak of Mamre.

One Amazing Saint

Today is the feast day of a beloved man many saw as a saint while he was still alive. Like Mother Teresa, Pope John Paul II was a beacon in the darkness. For the better part of my adult life, he was our Pope.

Saint Paul of the Cross

Paul Francis Daneo was born in northern Italy on January 3, 1694 to exemplary Catholic parents. This was during a time when many regarded Jesus as a great moral teacher, but not divine. Saint Paul was so moved by the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, he dedicated his life to the Passion.

Friday’s Feast for Saint Luke, Evangelist

It never ceases to amaze me how Christ continued to guide the early church even after His death and resurrection. Saint Paul is instrumental in the writings of the New Testament. Saint Luke has an entire Gospel and yet he was not an Apostle.

A Miracle in the Sky

Of all the miracles and apparitions surrounding Our Lady, my favorite has always been Our Lady of Fatima and in particular The Miracle of the Spinning Sun. But then again, I’m partial to all things Blessed Mother related. Call it a Catholic thing.

Our Lady of the Rosary

Today within the Church is the Memorial Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Catholics tend to use “feast” as a way to celebrate particular days throughout the year. In reality, there are Solemnities, Feast Days and Memorials.

On This Feast of Francis

Years ago, in a prior lifetime my best friend and I went to the movies to see Stigmata. Our children were in preschool together and we had some me-time on our hands. For reasons I cannot explain, the movie freaked us out.

Have Supper with Guardian Angels

All you need do today is to turn on the news and the world seems to have lost sight of its humanity. Hate leads the way and clouds our minds. Now more than ever before, we need to seek out our protectors. Each of us, before we were even born, were given an angel of the Lord. Fear not.

The Little Rose and Home-Baked Cookies

We haven’t talked about the Little Flower (Saint Theresa of Lisieux) since the Pandemic of 2020. I think it’s time we talk about her again. Saints are people – just ordinary people who eventually surrender to God’s will alone.

Our Defender in Battle

Once upon a time, the Church celebrated three separate feast days for the most prominent of the seven Archangels; Gabriel, Michael and Raphael. Of these three, only Michael is mentioned by name in three major religious writings; the Torah, the Koran and Holy Scripture.

It’s a Friday Night Delight

On a bright Summer Sunday not very long ago, I jokingly asked our Pastor if I could order a nice steak on Friday for our wedding anniversary and just say a Rosary as penance instead. His answer surprised me.

Last Ember Days of Autumn

Today is a day filled with options. The 21 day of September is both National New York Day and the Feast of Saint Matthew. This year we have a third option – an Ember Days of Autumn.

An Ember Days Friday in Autumn

Today’s inspiration comes from two Old School observances within the Church. It’s an Ember Days of Autumn and it’s a Friday.
