Celebrate Saint Joseph, Worker

In 1889, the International Socialist Conference declared May 1 to be an international day of celebration, a holiday for those who labor. As one can only imagine, this declaration did not sit well with the Catholic Church nor the United States. Yet both were slow to officially react.

Feast of Saint Mark, Evangelist

Typically on this date we talk about an event in history, East Meets West. However; since we’ve been there and done that a number of times, I thought sharring a bit more Catholic Faith would be nice. Don’t want the faith? That’s okay, just scrole down to the recipe. I promise, it was taste just as good.

Voici la fête de Sainte Bernadette

Unlike last year, when the Feast Day of Saint Bernadette was overshadowed by Divine Mercy Sunday, this year Bernadette has her feast day all to herself. Not that it took away from last year’s honoring of this simple woman. You see, Bernadette has not one but two feast days.

Yum – It’s Grilled Cheese Day!

If this recipe seems familiar, you’d be right. It’s one I made a while back for Kiddo and I. Since Hubby will be joining us, I’ve made some minor changes. We’ve elimiated the stronger cheeses; sticking with those that are mild and creamy. Hubby seems to be okay with that.

Have Mercy on Us

The Catholic Church trace its existance back to the very beginning. We have always acknowledged Saint Peter, the Rock, as our first Pope. What is a Pope but a Vicar of Christ. It is only fitting that the first Pope was appointed by Christ himself.

Praise Be!

Have you ever wonder where in the world Easter came from? I don’t mean the celebration of the Resurrected Lord on Easter Sunday. I mean the term Easter. It’s certainly not Latin for Resurrected. So how did Easter come to be known as Easter?

The Long Wait

Yesterday was Good Friday. Our alter has been stripped bare. The church seems sparse, crosses and statues are covered. There is no morning Mass before the Easter Vigil. The Church remains as empty as the world must have felt on the eve of that first Easter morning.

It is Finished

A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stick of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ Lips.
When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
John 19:29-30

Blessed Be Holy Thursday

Today is Holy Thursday. Most of us know this day as The Last Supper, for it was the day before Christ’s crucifixion. On this day, in the upper room, Jesus gathered with his disciples for the Passover. So often in our zeal to call ourselves Christians, we forget that Jesus was Jewish.

Forgivness on Wednesday of Holy Week

While the infamous Betrayal with a Kiss has not yet happened, we know from scripture that the motions of His betrayal have been put into place. The writing, if you will, is on the wall. There is no turning back.

Tuesday of Holy Week

Today is Holy Tuesday, one of the most important days of Holy Week for a number of reasons. There is the withered Fig Tree, the completion of Monday’s events on the road to Jerusalem. But Tuesday represents so much more.

Palm Sunday’s Feast of Gabriel

First lets get the Feast of Saint Gabriel out of the way. Prior to Vatican II and it’s many simplified changes in the traditional observances of the faith, three of the most predominant Archangels – Gabriel; Raphael and Michael each had their own feast day.

Welcome to the Last Lenten Friday

Today is the last Friday of the Lenten Season. While some people count Good Friday as the last Friday of the season, actually it’s not. The Lenten Season ends with the evening Mass of Holy Thursday. It is the Lord’s Supper, and it ushers in the Holy Triduum. More on that later.

Saint Joseph, Father and Husband

Today we celebrate one of two feast days to honor Saint Joseph, Christ’s earthy father. The full title of today’s feast is the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The fact this this is a Solemnity Feast speak volumes of the Church’s regard toward Saint Joseph.
