More Than Just The First Sunday

Today is the First Sunday in Lent. Remember, Sundays might fall during the Lenten Season (since days of the week cannot be postponed) but they are not a part of the Lenten Season. Sundays are a celebration. Lent is a time of penance and sacrifice.

French Toast as Special as Country Can Get

Welcome to the Saturday following Ash Wednesday. I really don’t know the significance of declaring the days immediately following Ash Wednesday, but the Church does. Perhaps it’s in the daily scriptures assigned to each day.

Oh My Goodness – A Brisket At Last!

Last December the 3rd Sunday of Advent and the 1st Night of Hanukah coincided. To honor that day, I wanted to share a recipe for Slow-Braised Beef Brisket. There was just one tiny problem, there were no briskets to be had.

Lesson Learned

I have never been so relieved to be home from Church in one piece in my life. I hate the way I feel right now. Ashamed.

Let Me Say I Love You in Three Courses

Today happens to be the most romantic day of the year, or at least that’s what we’ve all been told. Have you ever wondered why? Is that even possible – to wake up on the 14th of February and suddenly be filled with this overwhelming desire to be romantic.

Oh No – It’s Friday the 13th!

Today is Friday the 13th. In the Western world, this is a day which signifies bad luck or that bad things can happen. First of all, I’m not sure “luck” has anything to do with reality. We make choices, sometimes those decisions result in positive things in our lives, other times not so positive.

Dining in Italy

If only in my dreams. Hubby’s dreams were Tahitti. Mine were Italy. His idea of relaxation is to lay on a beach and sip Mai Tais. Mine is to sit in a sidewalk cafe, dine on exquisitely prepared meals and watch the world go by.

Pray for Us O Mother of God

When praying the Rosary, be it Glorious, Luminous, Sorrowful or Joyful Mysteries, after each set of 10 Hail Marys (decades) we recite two prayers before moving on to the next Mystery. One is the Glory Be, the other is the Fatima Prayer.

Did You Say Pizza for Breakfast?

Today is National Pizza Day. Now if you’ve been around a while (once again, thank you) then you know I’m no big fan of the traditional pizza.

What Are You Watching at Half-Time?

One thing I know for sure about tomorrow’s Super Bowl, the NFL half-time show is going to be a hard pass. There are a number of other options available such as TPUSA – which is set to record so we can enjoy it at our leasure. And then there’s the Great American Rescue Bowl, also set to record.

Break Out the Chopsticks!

Today is National Chopstick Day. Anytime we serve up an Asian dish, it is my custom to take the first bite using chopsticks. Much beyond that first bite and I have no choice but to grab a fork or starve. The only thing I can eat with chopsticks are chunks of meat or with some luck a grain of rice.

Reason Enough to Slow Down

Growing up, I can remember my mother placing a giant cast iron skillet on the stove top. She would then fry up some ground beef or ground pork or a combination of both. Drain well, add diced vegetables, tomato sauce and a can of tomato paste. Dad would come in behind her to add way too much salt.

A Tuesday with Crunch

Not that long ago, we hosted a family gathering at our home. Hubby and I did a little shopping at Costco for the event. Where else can you buy a 5-pound bag of corn tortilla chips for 2 bucks? Which also meant I needed to come up with ways to use all those chips.

What Is Candlemas?

Candlemas is a feast day or celebration within the Catholic Faith that is very much rooted in Jewish Traditions. So much of the Catholic customs can be traced back to Jewish observances. This makes sense since the first Christians were Jews and the first Catholic Pope was a fishman named Peter.

What Makes Sundays So Special

Where do I begin? Sundays are my favorite day of the week for so many reasons. The most obvious is that on Sundays Hubby and I start our day with Mass.
