Hail Holy Queen

Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve: to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

What’s the Theme of the Day?

Well it is Tuesday after all. Although I must confess, the day I made these Chimichangas for my guys marked the third day in a row we had a South of the Border inspired supper. What can I say?

Another Slow Cooker Day

Before we get to cooking, I want to wish my bouncing baby boy a very happy 50th Birthday. Wow, that kid is old! Oh wait, I guess that makes me even older. Love you sweetie!

Stop Creating Leftovers!

November 15 is National Clean Out Your Fridge Day. It was designed to create room for all the goodies of Thanksgiving, both in the prep and afterwards. Why do this on November 15 and not the Sunday before Thanksgiving is beyond me.

Okay, So It Isn’t Chicken Soup

Today is National Chicken Soup for the Soul Day. Now I thought about sharing a Chicken Noodle Soup recipe, but we’ve recently done that. We’ve also done Chicken and Rice Soup. So I thought we’d reach back into our catalog of soups and enjoy the most amazing Tomato Soup on the planet.

Sometimes Messing with a Good Thing is Good

Here’s to the amazing Roast Beef Sandwich. Some trace the origins of the American-Style roast beef sandwich back to the 1870s and a dish commonly called “Beefsteak Toast”. That’s cold slices of beef, bread and gravy. Nothing else.

Welcome to the First Friday

I guess it’s only natural on Fridays that my thoughts turn to faith. After all, as a Catholic I am keenly aware of the days of the week even now that I’m retired. I might not know a Monday from a Tuesday, but I sure know Fridays. Especially the first Friday of the month.

Hey, There’s A Man in My Kitchen!

On the first Thursday in November, we are suppose to toss men into the kitchen and out of their comfort zone to make the family dinner. I really don’t know when this National Day was established, but it does seem a little antiquated.

They Were Apostles

Today within the Church we honor the Feast Day of Simon and Jude, Apostles and martyrs in Christ. While the Bible’s focus is on Christ, as it should be, we are missing some key players in His holy ministry. There are glimpses sprinkled in scripture and early teachings, but no clean picture of who the Chosen were individually.

A Soup Fit for the Navy

Did you know that from 1922 to 1972, the US Navy celebrated its birthday on October 27 in honor of President Teddy Roosevelt’s birthday? Officially the Navy’s birthday is October 13. So why are we celebrating it today?

Sundays Are the Best!

Growing up, was it a roast chicken or a roast beef that was the traditional “roast” supper in your home? In our house, it all depended upon how many people were at the table. Chicken for smaller gatherings, a big roast beef when the house was overflowing with people.

Just a Splash of Wine

Today is National Liqueur Day. That is not to be confused with Liquor. The two are not the same, and therefore aren’t interchangeable. I’m not going to bore you with all the differences or technical terms. Simply put most Liqueurs are sweet, most Liquors are not.

A Blast from the Past

One morning as Kiddo stood in front of the refrigerator, reading the menu posted for the week, he asked why can’t we have stuff we like, that you’ve made before. I will admit, not everything I make is for blogging, but most of it is.

Sundays and Families

When I was growing up, Sundays were different. Today I would be willing to bet the number of families who attend Sunday Services together are in the minority – especially in certain parts of the country. Although studies are now beginning to reflect a return to churches.

Food for Thought

Missionaries must understand that they are stones hidden under the earth, which will perhaps never come to light, but which will become part of the foundation of a vast, new building. – Saint Daniel Comboni, 1st Bishop of Central Africa
