Are You a Bacon Fan?

Today is National Bacon Lovers Day and Chocolate Pecan Pie Day. Hum, what should we talk about? Bacon, of course!

Yippee-Ki-Yay It’s Saturday

It’s funny how things work out. In August, we have Hubby’s Birthday, our anniversary and our great-granddaughter’s birthday. Hubby and I will postpone or reschedule our birthdays and anniversary to accommodate family events.

A Beautiful Catholic Friday

Sometimes, when I talk about my Catholic roots, I feel as though I come across as bragging, full of my own sense of rightness. Believe me when I say that’s not what I intended. I love being a Cradle Catholic. It is a part of my very being, and it fills me with such joy, I cannot help but to want to share that with the world.

An Elegant Massachusetts Evening

Perhaps it’s that whole Kennedy legacy and Camelot of my youth, but when I think of Massachusetts, I think elegant, sophisticated and magical.

Tipsy Cow Chocolate Rum Milkshakes

Since today is National Rum Day, I thought it might be fun to do a little historical research on this sugar cane by-product. I guess I should have done my research prior to 2020, when America suddenly turned on its head about slavery, colonialism, and white privilege.

The Assumption of Mary

Today is the Feast Day of the Assumption of Mary into heaven. There is a certain personal comfort in what this day represents to the Church. It is a Holy Day of Oblation. Simply put, this a day when the faithful are required to attend Mass.

VJ Day On the Pacific Front

Kiddo is typically not one to suggest a movie for us to see as a family. If it’s something he is interested in, he will stream it and maybe, just maybe at the dinner table one evening he’ll share his thoughts. Oppenheimer was an exception. Even before it’s release, he expressed an interest in seeing the film, and thought we should see it, too.

Honoring The Spirit of a Great Generation

Today is National Filet Mignon Day and International Left Handers Day. It’s also the second Sunday in August, and that particular day trumps all the other secular days. And no, it’s not a Catholic Feast Day. Today we honor the greatest generation that has ever been. It’s Spirit of ‘45 Day.

Middle Child and Saturday Morning

It’s that National Day again – the one that celebrates the seemingly forgotten Middle Child. There are all sorts of studies that tell us our birth order helps to shape the people we become.

Celebrate The Day with a Pesto Chicken Panini

I know, it’s Friday. You were probably expecting some sea food or meatless pasta, right? After all, as Old School Traditional Catholics, we don’t eat meat on Fridays. And we won’t. We’re actually having Tilapia in a Lemon Caper Sauce this evening. Don’t worry, I’ll be sharing that recipe soon enough.

Celebrating Connecticut in the Summer

You would think that with the colors of Autumn, Connecticut would be celebrated in the fall. I’m not in charge of these thigs, so here we are in the middle of August giving a shout out to the fifth state to join the Union.

What is Rice Pudding?

Today is National Rice Pudding Day. This begs the question, just what the heck is rice pudding? Rice pudding is exactly as it sounds – a dish of rice served in a pudding, often with raisins and cinnamon. Does that sound appealing to you?

Spicy Beef-Chorizo Empanadas

Here it is, a beautiful Tuesday in August. Summer is slipping away faster than I’d rather. Oh don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan of sizzling heat, but this summer hasn’t been nearly as bad as others. Now I could be wrong, since we are spending more time at the community pool. So maybe it’s just as hot and I haven’t noticed. Hum . . .

A California Inspired Lighthouse Supper

Today is National Lighthouse Day. Those who have been around a while know I love the idea of lighthouses. I find it almost spiritual to sit quietly on a foggy morning and listening to the distant lonely sounds of a fog horn. It is haunting, and pierces my soul in ways no other sound can convey.

The Feast of Transfiguration

August 6 is an important date in both the Roman and Eastern rites of the Catholic Church. Today we celebrate the Feast of Transfiguration. Matthew (17:5), Mark (9:6) and Luke (9:35) all tell us that God spoke, confirming Jesus as His son.
