Today is National Tartar Sauce Day and the first Friday of the Lenten Season – how convenient. Let’s face it, you don’t have to be Catholic to appreciate a good Tartar Sauce, right?

Going Retro with Hamburger Gravy
It’s interesting to look back to a year ago, and discover that the two “National” Days I was drawn to were Chili Day and Retro Day. I hadn’t even realized it until now. We’ve already established that I love chili, so no surprise there. But Retro Day – that was interesting.
A Spicy Rotisserie Chili for National Chili Day
Today is one of those National Days just packed with inspiration. Chili Day (4th
Thursday in February), Kahlúa Day, Strawberry Day and Toast Day – all food related. Then there’s Anosmia Awareness Day, Retro Day and Polar Bear Day – could be fun. The two that drew my attention the most were Chili Day (cause who doesn’t love a big bowl of chili in February?) and Retro Day.
Creamy Parmesan Pork Chops
We’ve already established that today is Ash Wednesday. While in hour house that means fasting and abstinence, not everyone will be observing dietary restrictions for religious purposes. For some, this is just another Wednesday, for others it has meaning without the Catholic limitation. Fine by me.
And So It Begins
Today is Ash Wednesday. In the Christian world, it signals the beginning of the Lenten Season, a time of reflection and Abstinence. Like Advent, when Christians prepare for the coming of Christ, Lent is a time of preparation as well.
Toasting a Glass or Three to Fat Tuesday
What Mardi Gras Party can be complete without a little “spirit”? We’ve got the food, now let’s talk cocktails. From Lemonade to Jell-o Shots and big bowls of purple punch, we’ve got it all covered. So just pick your poison, or do them all!
It’s a Carnival Fling – Make it Count!
If today is Fat Tuesday, then tomorrow is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Lenten Season for most of the Christian World. While most people think of Mardi Gras and Fat Tuesday as being one and the same, that’s not entirely accurate.
Seafood Nachos and Tortilla Chips
Hey, we are on a roll with our Tortilla Chips now. If you aren’t going to dip the chips, when why not build a big tray of Nachos? Especially if your Tortillas Chips are freshly made at the market rather than a big bag of mass-produced chips. Thin and salty and oh so good!

Today is National Tortilla Chip Day. Now last year, we made our own Tortilla Chips to celebrate the day – and that was fun. My guys love it when I make our chips. But what’s the point of chips without a dip?

Now that Kiddo isn’t a kid anymore, family mealtime isn’t always such a big production of roasted chickens and mashed potatoes. Sometimes it’s simple, like a kettle of soup, some bread and unplugged time.
Down-Home Banana-Nut Bread
Today is National Banana Bread Day. When I think of Banana Bread, I think of my Home-Economic class. Home-Economics was part of the school curriculum back in the day. When I took the class, it was the 1960s, so what we learned to cook had a lot to do with the whole “hippie” movement just over the hill in Berkeley. We made a lot of brown rice and banana bread.
What’s Not to Love about Today?
It’s only fitting that National Margarita Day and California Day happen to fall on the same day. After all, if you are going to get down to the nuts and bolts of California Cuisine, it’s got to have a heavy Mexican influence. And what goes better with Mexican Cuisine than Margaritas?
Honoring California’s Heritage
Today is National California Day. I know when most people think California Cuisine, they picture thin-crust pizzas with artichokes and a white sauce or sprouts on a whole-grain sandwich.
Caregivers Day and Thoughtful Casseroles
Did you know that today is National Caregivers Day? It’s the one day a year when we should stop and thank the caregivers in our lives. We all have them. It could be the people that care for our children or the ones that care for our parents.
It’s National Pancake Day!
Today is National Pancake Day. Rather than give a standard flapjack recipe, I thought we’d reach back – way back. I love old cookbooks. This recipe, with a few modern interpretations, comes from an old tattered book that was published in 1908.
