Chinese Take Out Made Easy

Welcome to November 5, the first Saturday in November. On the National Celebration Stage, the first Saturday of every month is National Play Outside Day. I’m not sure what that says about growing up these days that we need to set aside one day each month to play outside. When I was a girl, every day was Play Outside Day.

Dance with a Caramel Apple Spice Cake

On the fourth day in November we are called to celebrate National Candy Day. It seems to me National Candy Day should be on Halloween. By November 4th, most of us are all candied out. But I’m not the one setting National Days.

Welcome to the First Thursday in November

First off, don’t you just love the featured photo – now that’s what I call a warm and inviting kitchen! The wood beams, the brick, the tile floors – all so natural and earthy. Makes me want to bake apple pies after the harvest. Yeah, dream on!

Honoring All Souls Day

All Souls Day is very much a Catholic teaching. The Church tells us that “all who die in God’s grace, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.”

Celebrating All Saints’ Day

Today is All Saints Day. It is a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholics. That means we are obligated to attend Mass on November 1. The exception would be if November 1 should fall on a Saturday or Monday. Then the Obligation of Mass is moved to Sunday.

Beautiful Grilled Tri-Tip Kabobs

As the days grow cooler, summertime foods tend to go on sale. Things like New York Steaks for grilling, and Tri-Tip Steaks are marked way, way down. Lucky for us, because we can stock up. There’s room in the freezer and a little wiggle room in the food budget.

A Beautiful Glazed Salmon Supper

Ahoy US Navy!

Unofficially, today just happens to be US Navy Day. Officially, the Navy’s birthday is October 13. In our Catholic house, that creates a conflict since October 13 is also the Miracle of the Spinning Sun. Choosing is not up for debate. I love my country, but I love God more. Thank goodness, we have an Unofficial Navy Day.

It’s National Tennessee Day

Today we honor and celebrate all that is the great state of Tennessee. On June 1, 1796, Tennessee was admitted into the Union as the 16th state. On June 24, 1861, Tennessee became the 11th and last state to secede from that same Union at the start of the Civil War.

Provided that there aren’t other things happening, in our house Tuesdays are known as Tijuana Tuesday. That means serving up tacos or burritos or enchiladas – anything Mexican goes. And Mexican Food (most of the time) is accompanied by Margaritas.

United Nations Day NY Style

Today is United Nations Day. This day had a very special meaning in my home. My father, an Okie from Oklahoma, while serving in the Air Force during the Korean War, met my mother, a Filipino beauty from a politically influential family. They were married on October 24, United Nations Day.
