Tex-Mex Game Day Dip Cups

When you have a Super Bowl Party, is Bean Dip or Seven-Layer Dip part of your repertoire? For most of us, the answer is yes. I love the idea of changing things up a bit with individual dipping cups.

National New England Clam Chowder Day

Today is not just National Clam Chowder Day, but New England Clam Chowder Day. In New England, they take their cream based chowder very seriously. Often, you’ll find the soup special of the day to be Clam Chowder on any given Friday. That’s a throwback to the days when the Catholic Church was strict when in came to abstaining from meat on Fridays.

Dominican’s Our Lady of Altagracia

Our Lady of Altagracia goes by many beautiful names including my favorite, Our Lady of Grace. She is said to watch over and protect the people of the Dominican Republic. The Dominicans see the sacred image as exemplifying how Our Lady watches over the island, nurturing the growth of Christianity there.

National Cheese Lover’s Day and Spicy Cheese Pinwheels

Today is National Cheese Lover’s Day. To honor the day, we should be talking about the rich history of cheese, or how Americans have awakened their senses with gourmet cheeses. Yeah, there’s more to cheese than a block of Velveeta!

Great Men Believe in the Power of Dreams

Today America celebrates MLK Day. Dr. King was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. Like so many National Holidays, his birthday is celebrated on a Monday, rather than his actual birthday, creating that beloved Three-Day Weekend. While some folks have the day off, the rest are working in the retail and service industries. After all, MLK Day is a good excuse to buy a new mattress or dining room set. And all that shopping works up an appetite.

Sundays are Made for Family Suppers

Once upon a time, families would drop off their Sunday Roasts at the local bakery on their way to Church. The baker would pop the roasts from his neighbors into his massive ovens, and there they would cook. After church, people picked up their roasts and headed home for a family meal.

It’s National Popcorn Day!

Today is National Popcorn Day. I find that personally ironic. Today is my Dad’s Birthday. Every year for Christmas, I give him a tin of assorted popcorn. Its our tradition. Dad loves his popcorn snacks.

Rustic Carmel Apple Galette make Weekends Special

I am so thrilled that we will be putting our best efforts into reclaiming Sunday as a family day, to honor family traditions and bask in the company of those we love. Family Sunday can take on any form you like. For my youngest sister, Family Sunday is at the soccer field cheering on her son. For us, it’s a nice meal together at the end of a perfect day.

Rosie the Riveter and Car Hops

As part of National Michigan Day, I was going to write about the most recognized image of a woman in modern times – Rosie the Riveter. The poster image was part of a campaign aimed at boosting morale among company workers at Westinghouse Electric Corporation. (I didn’t know that).

Bootleggers and Hot Buttered Rum

First of all, let’s give a big Thank You to Teresa Capone, an Italian immigrant who’s son was born on this day in Brooklyn in 1899. Wow, that was a long, long time ago! Gabriele and Teresa Capone had nine children, Alphonse would become the most famous.

Linguine Pesto Shrimp Pasta

When it came to making this beautiful Friday Night Supper, I had mixed emotions. You know me, I love everything Italian. That is unless it includes Eggplant. Love the color, not wild about the taste.

What is an Italian Meatloaf?

When you get right down to it, what is any Meatloaf but a giant meatball shaped like a loaf of bread. So when you think about it, an Italian Meatloaf is nothing new. While Americans slather their meatloaf (and just about anything else) with Ketchup, this Italian rendition uses a Marinara Sauce for that same look.

Look Out – It’s International Hot and Spicy Day

As far as National or International Days goes, January 16th offers up some interesting choices. In addition to International Hot and Spicy Day (right up my alley), we have Fig Newton Day, Religious Freedom Day, Without a Scalpel Day and National Nothing Day.

Denver’s Eggs without the Omelette

Do you like a Denver Omelette? Silly question, right? Most people, including Kiddo and Hubby, do. Sometimes I’m in the mood for everything except the omelette part. That’s when I switch into scramble mode.

Belgium Waffle Hash Browns

One morning as I was trying to get motivated enough to finish packing up the Christmas Decorations, I convinced myself that if I had something satisfying for breakfast, I’d be more productive. Yeah, right.
