Traditional Wiener Schnitzel and National Days

Today is the 9th day of September, National Teddy Bear Day, National Care Bear Share Your Care Day, National Boss-Employee Exchange Day and National Wiener Schnitzel Day. While I love Teddy Bears, you can’t eat one. Share your care is great, something we all need to do every day. As for the boss-employee exchange, I’m retired. Besides, how many times do you think that happens? It might be a National Day, but I doubt it’s one that is observed across the country. That leaves us with National Wiener Schnitzel Day.

Hello beautiful Sunday. Today is the beginning of yet another wonderful week. What’s that you say? What makes this so great? We are alive! Every day is an opportunity to love and be loved. To show kindness and make a difference. Isn’t that reason enough to rejoice?

Mother Mary Ombré Rosette Cake

Before we get into today’s recipe, I ask that you respect my beliefs. If you are offended by Catholic teachings, that’s okay. This isn’t the forum for argument. You need not read further. We will be getting back to non-religious cooking soon enough. If you want to learn more or simply want to bake a pretty cake, stick around.

Tailgate Saturday and Yukon Gold Roast Beef Crostini

Did you know that today is National Tailgate Day? Since National Tailgate Day is observed on the first Saturday in September, obviously this in reference to College Football and not the NFL. No matter, it’s still a good reason to celebrate.

Asian Inspired Marinated Grilled Pork Chops

Up until those first drops of rain fall and the weather becomes unpredictable, as far as we are concerned the grilling season has not yet ended! Besides, my crazy husband has been known to stand in the rain (a light rain) and grill. The only thing that truly stands in his way are lightning storms. After all, it’s generally not a good idea to hold a long set of metal tongs or be under an umbrella during a lightning storm!

Hot Salsa Chicken Burrito Wraps

Recently I mentioned our prior life – one with travel to far away places. Every now and again, when I think Mexican Foods I think of Cozumel. I remember walking through the streets of Cozumel with Hubby and Kiddo, taking in the sights and sounds and smells of this seaside town.

Broiled Halibut with Moroccan Chermoula

Although it’s been a while, we’ve talked about Chermoula before. Basically, this is a condiment, much like Ketchup is to the American Household, that is found in North Africa. While used for fish, like Ketchup goes with more than just Fries, Chermoula has been known to flavor rice, chicken and even vegetables.

Eating Smart and Seasoned Tilapia Fish Fry

Can we talk fish for a moment? Tilapia sure have been getting a bad reputation for a while now. These fish are generally farm-raised, cheap to bring to market and best of all don’t have that strong “fishy” taste that generally turns people off. Cheap and tasty – that’s what makes Tilapia so popular. Yet we hear warnings. So are Tilapia bad for us?

Hooray for National Macadamia Nut Day!

Botanically speaking, Macadamia nuts are not actually a nut. From a purely culinary perspective, the Macadamia is a nut. Visitors to Hawaii always bring back a box of Chocolate Covered Macadamia Nuts as gifts. You would think Macadamia trees were indigenous to Hawaii, but the truth is they hail from Australia.

Louisiana Shrimp and Andouille Sausage Gumbo

There ain’t nothin’ in this world more awesome than Gumbo. Even the name – Gumbo – is awesomely fun to say. There may be some “traditions” when it comes to Gumbo, like most stew-soups, just about anything goes into the pot and often does.

It’s Baby Back Rib Day!

Is today National Baby Back Rib Day? Who knows! I’ve seen the date as yesterday, September 2nd, while most listings claim that September 3rd is the actual dates. Personally, I don’t care so long as I get to eat some ribs. Any day we enjoy ribs is National Rib Day in my book.

What the Heck is Welsh Rarebit?

Did you know that today is National Welsh Rarebit Day? For those of you living outside of America, or for those who have traveled or experienced the world in a big way, then you know that this isn’t a weird spelling for Rabbit, and that Welsh Rarebit has nothing to do with eating a bunny.

Italian Sausage with Mini Bells over Pasta

For those of you who have been following along, you know that we are growing San Marzano tomatoes in our garden. When we planted two small plants in our garden in the spring, we knew nothing about these tomatoes, aside from the fact that the whole canned tomatoes are some of the more expensive canned tomatoes on the shelf.

Grilled Lemon with Salmon-Rice Foil Packs

There is a great importance in remembering the past. So often I hear “get over it, leave the past alone, don’t look back” and so forth. That has always bothered me. If we forget the past, we are bound to repeat mistakes. It’s one thing to wallow in the past and feel sorry for ourselves. It’s another to remember. And to honor the importance of that past.
