Herb Gardens and Honey-Glazed Carrots with Lemon Thyme

When I say Lemon Thyme, I’m not referring to Lemons and Thyme. In my herb garden, I’m growing Lemon Thyme. I don’t know if this variety of thyme can be found in the produce section of your grocery store. I’ve just always grown it in a pot on the back patio.

Buttery Baked Cod with Garlic Couscous

Couscous is like Bora Bora or Mahi Mahi, so awesome you need to say it twice. Okay, so Bora Bora and Mahi Mahi are actually the same words twice, while Couscous is just one word. Reason? You can’t shorten it. Okay, you might never call Bora Bora just Bora, but I bet you’ve said Mahi for the fish rather than Mahi Mahi. I know I have. You know, as in we’re grilling wild caught Mahi tonight.

Assumption and Cherry Tomato Herb Salad

Did you know that today, August 15, is the Feast of the Assumption of Mary into heaven? It’s okay if you didn’t, not all Catholics know the significance of this day. And it’s not my job to convert anyone. I’m not even going to try. Let’s just say that, as a Catholic, I believe and from a religious perspective we’ll leave it at that.

V-J Day’s Tempura Shrimp with Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce

Have you ever heard the expression V-J Day? Up until recently, I hadn’t. I knew it had something to do with the war, as in World War II. V-J Day meant Victory over Japan Day. On August 14, 1945, the news broke around the world that the Imperial Government of Japan would agree to surrender. In Europe, it was August 15th due to the International Date Line. Regardless of which side of the date line you were on, celebrations broke out across the globe with zealous fury. The war was coming to an end.

Cool Down with a Watermelon and Blue Cheese Salad

August is traditionally a very hot month in my neck of the woods. It’s the height of summer. It makes sense that today is National Watermelon Day. After all, a watermelon is over 90% water. When it’s hot outside, a cool watermelon is perfect. What could be better you ask? How about a watermelon salad!

Summer’s Awesome Gift – The Tomato Salad

Have I mentioned we have a lovely garden? Summer is a great time to feature the bounty of our garden. This salad was the perfect vehicle. Every year, we plant four or five different types of tomatoes – variety is the spice of life after all. This year, we planted two very different heirloom tomatoes – The Russian Bull’s Heart and the Cherokee Purple Tomatoes. One was for Hubby’s heritage, the other mine.

Texas Filet Mignon with Creamy Mushroom Sauce

What is it about a good cast iron skillet that makes for the best seared food? Nothing, and I mean nothing beats my cast iron skillet when it comes to searing steaks. I’ve had the same set of skillets for over 45 years. No body is allowed to mess with my skillet!

Old Bay-Larger Maryland Steamed Blue Crabs

Confession time – I’ve never personally tried this recipe. It’s in my collection in the hopes that some day I’ll have access to live blue crabs. And when I do, that I’ll have what it takes to cook ’em live. To those of you that can get ’em and cook ’em, how I envy you!
