Tis That Time of Year

Happy Saturday! Today is going to be a most interesting day. Hubby’s company is participating in our town’s Christmas Parade. They are decorating a flatbed truck, some of the employees will be riding on the truck, others walking along side, all waving at the crowd waiting for Santa.

Welcome to the First Saturday in December

The first Saturday of every month is supposed to be National Play Outside Day. I’ve used this for inspiration when I haven’t found anything else to talk about. Personally, I find it funny that this generation needs to be reminded to play outside. My generation, and those before me, certainly didn’t need a reminder.

Deck the Halls

When do you decorate your Christmas Tree? Some folks do it the day after Thanksgiving. Some folks wait until the first of December, while others wait until Christmas Eve. We’re the day after Thanksgiving type.

Feast of Saint Andrew

As He passed by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen, Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Then they abandoned their nets and followed him.” Mark 1:16-18

Our Lady of the Golden Heart

Did you know that there are at least 38 recorded Marian Apparitions? Of those, only 26 have received the full approval of the Church. The first recorded apparition was in the year 40, Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza, Spain. A Marian Apparition is an appearance of the Blessed Virgin Mary, come down from heaven, usually to communicate some sort of message or to make a request of the faithful.

Giving Tuesday and Warmth from the Oven

Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 by Henry Timms at the 92nd Street Y in New York. The point of the day is once we’re done with Black Friday and Cyber Monday, that we reach down and give a little during the Holidays.

Cyber What? It’s Mellow Monday Here

For the life of me, I don’t understand Black Fridays or Cyber Mondays or any of the other stressful shopping extravaganzas we seem drawn to. I guess, for me growing up it was never about a big screen TV or getting all my gifts at a discount with a push of a button.

Christ is King

In the Western World of the Catholic Church, as in most all of the Protestant churches, today is recognized as Christ the King Sunday. The Latin Rite of the Catholic Faith celebrated Christ the King Sunday on October 29, the last Sunday before All Saints.

Mealtime is Meant for Sharing

If there is one thing children know it’s that food just tastes better when eaten with a friend. And the more gathered round the table the better. Children don’t need a reminder to Dine with a Friend.

Welcome to My Black Friday

While most of the rest of America is probably in some state of crazy right about now with Black Friday, I’ve got to tell you that’s something we’ve never experienced. Growing up, I had never even heard the term “Black Friday” and with good reason.

A Thanksgiving Prayer of Service

Father all-powerful, Your gifts of love are countless and Your goodness infinite. On this Thanksgiving Day we come before You with gratitude for Your kindness.

Open our hearts fully that we may see the needs of others and share in Your gift of loving service.

We ask this through Christ, our Lord, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Alleluia, alleluia.
In all circumstances, give thanks,
for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.
Alleluia, alleluia.

Thanksgiving Past and Present

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. It’s a bitter sweet celebration this year. I miss the Thanksgivings we once knew, with the house bursting at the seams with extended family. Growing up, family was more than just relatives. Friends were family, too. Our house was filled with people and plenty of good food.

The Feast of Mary’s Presentation

Today in the Catholic Church we celebrate the Presentation of the Virgin Mary. This feast is a part of both Roman and Eastern rites as well as some Anglo-Catholics. The roots of this feast are not found in the Canonized Bible but rather recount the apocryphal Gospel of Saint James.

An Absurd Chili Dog Casserole

One of the nice things about made up National Days is that they seem to roll around, year after year. We get to have a bit of fun, or talk about a serious subject. Today is National Absurdity Day. Just take a look at that casserole – it’s really absurd, don’t you think? I mean, what’s going on with that piece of foil snaked through the dish?

Beautiful Sunday Supper

Our year is nearly at an end. Next Sunday is the Feast of Christ the King, the last Sunday of the Church year. The following Sunday Advent begins, as the Church embraces a new liturgical year, with readings from Cycle B, and a focus on the Gospel of Saint Mark. For Catholics today, the Bible readings presented on Sundays are divided into Year A, Year B and Year C.
