Advent’s Call for Peace

Today posed a challenge. December 5th is National Repeal Prohibition Day. Prohibition went into effect with the passage of the 18th Amendment in 1920 and repealed on December 5, 1933 with the 21st Amendment. Celebrating the end of Prohibition is easy.

It’s Time to Get Baking

Welcome to National Cookie Day. Today is the day when we roll up our sleeves, warm up our ovens and begin baking cookies to fill our Holiday Tins. Be it cookie exchanges or party favors or just the mood that Christmas seems to bring, everyone’s a baker this time of year.

Are We Ready to Say Farewell?

The holidays are nearly upon us. Do you have your tree trimmed? And the gifts – are they all wrapped? Then you are far ahead of me. A cold has me down for the count. Hubby and Kiddo have both promised to lend a hand to get our festivities back on track.

Peppermint Gifts From the Kitchen

Hello there! Welcome to National Peppermint Latte Day. Okay, so not every calendar site agrees, but some do. Even then, I almost went in another direction.

A Lemony Chicken Piccata Supper

Welcome to a typical Thursday in our home. One of the benefits of retirement is that we get to enjoy home cooked meals everyday, not just on the weekends.

Rosa Parks and Wild Card Wednesday

On December 1, 1955, during a typical evening rush hour in Montgomery, Alabama, a small, unassuming woman took a seat on a city bus. She was black, and as the law dictated, she walked toward the back of the bus, finding a seat in the 11th row. She could not sit in the first 10 rows. Those were reserved for white riders only.

Down the Mississippi

Often when we think South – as in Deep South, Mississippi is one of the first places that springs to mind. Mississippi was the 20th state to join the union, and the 2nd to secede. More than 80,000 Mississippians fought in the Civil War. They did not fight on the side of the Union. Yet the first Memorial Day took place in Mississippi to lay flowers on the graves of those who died on both sides.

A Dreamy, Creamy Day Kind of Day

Welcome to the Monday after Thanksgiving. Anyone with an internet connection knows what that means – Cyber Monday. Just as I don’t shop Black Friday, Cyber Monday doesn’t do much for me. Truth be told, until the whole pandemic thing, I rarely (and I mean rarely) shopped online. I will admit, it is convenient.

Triple Chocolate Delight – Oh My!

Welcome to the 26th day of November. This year it is also known by a variety of other names, most notably Black Friday. In America, Black Friday is the official kick-off to the holiday shopping insanity. Die hard shoppers and bargain hunters will sacrifice Thanksgiving with family to wait in line for that mad dash to score those deals. It’s some sort of right of passage for some.

Invite a Friend to Dine

Today is National Eat with a Friend Day. It comes around every year on November 25. This year it happens to coincide with Thanksgiving – how convenient! Not everyone has family nearby to celebrate our National Day of Thanks. And not everyone celebrates Thanksgiving for whatever reason.

Spicy Taco Tuesday

Oh how we love Tuesdays in our house. I’m not sure if that’s because my guys are fans of all things Mexican and Spicy, or if it’s the Margaritas that they love so much. One thing is certain, most Tuesdays are pretty darn festive here.
