The Badger State, otherwise known as Wisconsin, is rich in copper, forest and unending fertile farmlands. A mining boom, not fur trade, gave this state its nickname. According to oral history, the miners burrowed into the hillsides like a bunch of badgers for shelter against the elements instead of building more permanent homesteads. Guess they weren’t planning to stick around.

Caramelized Onion Mashed Potatoes
Growing up in a Filipino-American household, we ate a lot of rice. Roast Beef with stewed carrots, pan gravy and rice. Not mashed potatoes but rice. Skillet Pork Chops with creamy gravy and rice. The meat was from my Okie Father, the side from my Filipino Mother. While I do like rice, hands down I’m a potato gal.
Valentine’s Day Pepperoni Pizza
A few nights ago Hubby and I were chatting about Valentine’s Day. As newly weds, it was a big deal. I got flowers and a teddy bear and we went out for a nice dinner. But as time when on, Valentine’s Day became less important.
There is more to Italy than Tomato Sauce
Would you believe it’s another of those National Food Days. Like any of us need an excuse to eat delicious foods. Today we have a great assortment of things to celebrate – it’s Cheddar Cheese Day, Italian Food Day and Tortellini Day.
Can You Guess What Today Is?
Yep, it’s National Cheddar Cheese Day. My first thought was a cheese board. Love creating Cheese Boards. But then, Cheddar wouldn’t be the star of the recipe. What about Cheese Sauce? You know, like my Onion Cheese Sauce for Broccoli. Again, good but . . .
Pretty in Pink Champagne Cake with Champagne Frosting
Sometimes I think we don’t spend enough time making desserts. Most of us, yours truly included, aren’t the best pastry chefs. It’s so easy to pick up a little something from the local bakery. So often, dessert after dinner is nothing more than a bowl of ice cream while watching T.V.

Valentine Seafood Supper
This year, Valentine’s Day falls on a Friday. In our house, we observe the “No Meat On Fridays” rule for Catholics. I know it’s old-fashion and most Catholics today don’t abide by the “old rules” – it’s just our thing.
Two-Bite Tacos with Chipotle Sour Cream
Have you ever seen those little mini-tacos in the frozen foods that you simply pop in the oven and enjoy? Same thing, only much, much better. Okay, so maybe not as convenient as the two-bite appetizer tacos pre-made, but homemade puts you in the driver’s seat.

On February 11, 1858, a young girl was gathering firewood with her sister and a friend. Two of the girls crossed a little stream in front of a grotto, and walked on, leaving the young girl alone. She had always been sickly, and feared crossing the cold waters of the stream to join the others. So she waiting for her companions to return.
A Cheesy Twist on Broccoli
What is it about wrapping food in Crescent Rolls that makes it so darn special? I don’t know about you, but I have a can or two in my refrigerator at all times, and almost never make Crescent Dinner Rolls.
Have You Had Your Brownie Today?
Today is National Have a Brownie Day, which is not to be confused with the actual National Brownie Day of December 8th. No, on this day you aren’t required to make brownies, but rather to simply have them. I suppose you could pick up some brownies at the local market, take them home and put them on a serving plate to be admired. But what’s the fun in that?
You are Invited to Nana’s Sunday Supper
Do you ever wonder if you were someone else in a prior life? I don’t mean someone famous like Napoleon or Cleopatra. I mean just an ordinary person living in a different time and place.
Celebrating National Pizza Day – Sort of
Today is National Pizza Day, which ask the question is a Stromboli or a Calzone just another word for pizza? They are. But then again, they aren’t. Pizzas are open-faced, Stromboli are square pizza dough that is rolled. Calzones are round pizza dough that is folded in half. The similarities are in the dough. The differences are what you do with it.
Nacho Cheese Grilled Chorizo Burritos
A few days after we had enjoyed our very messy Quesadilla Burgers, I stood in the kitchen and wondered what to make for lunch. There are a few stables in our house that are always on hand. Flour Tortillas in a variety of sizes, Nacho Cheese Dip and good Mexican Chorizo.
A Feast to Honor National Iowa Day
Today is National Iowa Day. The Hawkeye State was the 29th state to join the Union. Nearly 92-percent of the land is farmland. While Iowa might grow a lot of corn; hogs outnumber people in Iowa nearly 4-to-1. Wow, that’s a lot of pork! Turns out an Iowan also gave the world sliced bread. And according to Ripley’s Believe It or Not, Burlington’s Snake Alley is considered the most crooked street in the world.
