Presentation of the Lord, Alleluia

When the days were completed for their purification
according to the law of Moses,
Mary and Joseph took Jesus up to Jerusalem
to present him to the Lord,
just as it is written in the law of the Lord,
Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord,
and to offer the sacrifice of
a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons,
in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.

Capturing the Flavors of the Lone Star State

Today we celebrate the Lone start State – Texas. Today is also National Freedom Day. On February 1, 1865 President Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution outlawing slavery. The states did not ratify the amendment until December 18, 1865. On June 30, 1948, President Truman signed a bill proclaiming February 1 officially as National Freedom Day in the United States.

Happy Birthday Boo Bear

On the National Food Front, today is Hot Chocolate Day. Perfect for the last day in January. Maybe next year, I’ll share a recipe more in keeping with the National Day.

Baked Gemelli with Herb Pinwheels

Today is National Croissant Day. When it comes to pastries, Croissants rank right up there as my favorite. I love Croissant Sandwiches. And I adore Almond Croissants for breakfast. Here in American, we think we know Croissants. What we know are grocery store bakeries. If you can, find a true French Bakery. What a difference!

Would You Believe?

Today has several National Days to pick from. The one with the greatest impact has to be National Big Wig Day. It was designed to raise money as well as awareness on a number of worthwhile fronts to help people who may need wigs after an illness. For more information on how to observe the last Friday in January, please visit the National Big Wig Day website.

A Simple Feast for a Scholarly Saint

Today is the Feast of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Years ago, we belonged to a parish that had the tradition of handing out small loaves of dark bread at the end of Mass in honor of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Tucked inside the wrappings were quotes from Saint Thomas Aquinas. I miss that tradition.

Beyond Chocolate Chocolate Cake

When it comes to celebrating special occasions such as anniversaries, birthdays or weddings, we do so with cake. When asked to name a favorite cake flavor, more often than not people say Chocolate Cake. Hubby’s favorite is marble, so that’s sort of chocolate. I like a French Vanilla Cake best.

Simple Beef Risotto Supper

Every now and again, I get a craving for something simple yet not typical for supper. Beefy Corn Rice-A-Roni is a great example. Just three simple ingredients – a box of beef Rice-A-Roni, a pound of ground beef and a can of corn.

Celebrating the Flavors of Florida

Today is National Florida Day, so let’s talk Florida Cuisine. While every country has its dishes, and every region its distinct style, Florida is one of the most uniquely diverse in the world. Its multicultural exchange of flavors can be traced back to 1513 when Ponce de Leon claimed Florida for Spain.

Lobster Thermidor for Two

Personally, if I were in charge National Lobster Thermidor Day would be February 14th. I mean, what is more romantic than lobster? Especially Lobster Thermidor.

Oh What a Sweet Day!

Did you know that the first pies appeared around 9500 BC? Yeah, we are talking a long, long time ago in Egypt. As a source of comic relief, we’ve been hitting people with cream pies since Ben Turpin received one in the film Mr. Flip in 1909.

The Perfect Union of Two National Days

What an awesome day! On the National Food Front, today is a celebration of Southern Cooking and (yum) Blonde Brownies. It’s also Friday. We all know that in our house, Fridays are Old School from a Catholic perspective. It’s a meatless day.

Feast Day of Our Lady of Altagracia

Here we are, on the down side of January. Yesterday was a big day in America. I’ve made no secret of the fact that I am a conservative Republican. It was hard and a little scary to see the country go so blue. Maybe I drank the Republican cool aid but the thought of American becoming a Solicits Country scares me. Yet as a woman of faith, I must trust in God and in His wisdom.

When a Simple Grilled Cheese Will Not Do

Hands down, today is one of my favorite Food Days. It’s National Cheese Lover’s Day – hooray! While we have no firm evidence of how cheese making was first discovered, legend tells us that it was likely by chance. The first Cheesemaker did not set out to make cheese, but rather discovered it naturally.

Sweetly Salty Snack

Let me start by saying Happy Birthday Dad! I find it funny that my Dad shares his birthday with National Popcorn Day. My Dad loves his popcorn. Every year for Christmas I get him a big tin of popcorn – it’s my traditional gift to him. Even this year, with our White Elephant Gift Exchange, I still gave Pops his favorite snack.
