Ode to Southern Brine Fried Chicken

Decided to share this recipe today rather than tomorrow was a tough choice. Today is Sunday. Sundays and chicken dinners just naturally go together. Chicken dinners and family just naturally go together. Today is all about togetherness. It’s National Family Day, National Friendship Day and National Sisters Day. All great reasons to enjoy Southern Fried Chicken.

Mexican Brunch on a Plate

Have I mentioned that my absolute favorite meal of the day is breakfast-brunch? Pastries and pancakes and all sorts of wonderful things. If I could eat only once, it would be the morning meal. And if I had it my way, that meal would last all day.

Won’t You Have a Seat?

Unlike July’s table that just seemed to scream right through the photo “Wow – look at me!!!”, the tablescape for August is more subdued. It’s one of those tables you need to take a seat at to appreciate all the little things.

Summertime is the Ripe Time

Welcome to August. For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s the first day of the last month of summer. Okay, so summer doesn’t officially end until September 22 this year, but we don’t think “summer” in September. Back in the day, September meant the start of the school year, and that spelled the end of summer.

Avocado Day the California Way

Today is National Avocado Day. Have I mentioned that I love avocados? Avocado toast, avocado salad – avocado everything. Must be why last year I shared an entire Avocado Menu.

Where There’s a Will

How’s life been thus far? I think, if we could have a do-over year because it was such a mess, 2020 would be at the top of the list. It’s not just the pandemic, it’s all the craziness.

The Evolution of July’s Table

So, do you think July’s table was too busy? Comparing last year’s table to this year’s table, wow! Gotta wonder.

Singing the Praises of Chicken Wings

Today is all about the chicken wing. Well, not entirely. It’s National Lasagna Day, National Lip Stick Day and National Chicken Wing Day. I gotta tell you, the thought of eating a heavy lasagna in July just doesn’t appeal to me right at the moment. If Lasagna appeals to you, try Lasagna with Garlic Monkey Bread. It’s delicious.

The Evolution of Table Scapes

First off, do you set your table? Or do you dine Buffet-Style? We actually do both, but the “birdroom” table is always set.

Honoring the Buffalo Soldier

Today is National Buffalo Soldier Day. In 1992 Congress set this day aside to commemorate the formation of the first regular Army regiments of African American soldiers in 1866. Following the Civil War, Congress passed the Army Organization Act, creating six all-black cavalry and infantry regiments. It was the first such creation during peacetime.

Hey Lucy, It’s New Jersey Day!

Today is National New Jersey Day. The state motto is Liberty and Prosperity. Originally, I wanted to accomplish two things to honor New Jersey, the 3rd state to join the Union. The first was to share some of her history and high points. The second was to create an awesome New Jersey Style Supper, complete with all the trimmings. In my research, I was sidetracked, so we’ll have a fun adventure instead.

A Day Too Awesome to Miss

National Crème Brûlée Day isn’t until tomorrow, but then tomorrow is also National New Jersey Day. Believe me when I tell you that I tried to tie in National Crème Brûlée Day with the state of New Jersey. Couldn’t be done, but I also didn’t want to miss my deep love of all things Crème Brûlée.

Get Along Little Doggie

Today is one of those National Days that was just packed with inspiration. Right out of the gate, there were three very different styles to celebrate. Picking just one was impossible, so why even try?

Would You Believe

It’s National Drive-Thru Day. When you hear the term “Drive-Thru” what comes to mind? For most of us, it’s the convenience of ordering burgers, fries and something to drink without ever leaving the comfort of our cars. Yet many businesses offer us that drive-thru experience, from banks to pharmacies and dry-cleaners. When I was a little girl, we got our milk from a drive-thru dairy.

What to do with Ocean Trash

Along the Oregon coast is the little town of Bandon. It’s a sleepy little coastal town with a lighthouse, a famous rock, nearby tide pools and sand dunes. Summer tourism is its life blood. And tourists leave behind mounds and mounds of trash.
