Cheddar-Chili Dog Casserole

First let me begin by saying that today is National Pastry Day. While I adore Pastries, especially anything French, when it comes to making good pastries, that’s just not in my wheelhouse. Would the biscuits on my casserole count? Didn’t think so, but it was worth a try.

Mary’s Immaculate Feast

From a purely religious perspective, today is a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholics. While not rooted in scripture, today is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The term Immaculate Conception often confuses people, even some Catholics.

The Illinois Pearl Harbor Connection

Every year on this Day, December 7th, I’ve share posts and recipes revolving around the obvious – the attack on Pearl Harbor that propelled America into World War II. Next year will mark the 80th Anniversary. Wow!

Welcome to Our December Home

Over the years, we’ve concentrated our Holiday Decorating to the inside of our home rather than the outside. At first I didn’t understand why that was and then I realized, Christmas is my holiday.

Second Sunday of Advent and Saint Nicholas

Today two very special Christmas Season Days happily fall on the same day. December 6th is the Feast Day of Saint Nicholas. Today also happens to be a Sunday in the Advent Season.

What Comforts You?

Once again, depending upon which National Calendar you wish to follow, today might just be National Comfort Food Day. On the Foodie scene, it’s also Sacher Torte Day and Rhubarb Vodka Day. The vodka makes sense since on December 5, 1933 Prohibition was repealed. That alone is reason to celebrate.

Friday’s Rigatoni al Vino Bianco

Today is National Sock Day. Now you would think, with socks the most sought after item in homeless shelters in the winter, that National Sock Day would be promoting an awareness of this need. How simple, during your Holiday Shopping, just pick up a package of socks and drop them off at a nearby shelter. Such generosity would be effortless.

French Silk Layer Cake and a Peppermint Latte

As with so many National Days, National Peppermint Latte appears on some calendars on December 3, and is missing on others completely. Last year, I chose to celebrate Peppermint Latte with a delicious recipe that utilizes Candy Canes. It’s December, what else would you expect?

A Simple Feast for a Little Known Saint

Today is the Feast Day of Saint Bibiana. Not many know of this Virgin Martyr of the early church. She is the patron saint of Single Laywomen and Torture Victims. When you learn of her life and death, those make sense. She was single, and was tortured to death for her faith. Saint Bibiana is also the patron saint of Epilepsy, Hangovers, Headaches, Insanity and Mental Illness. Those are connections that escape me.

Not Another Taco Tuesday

Today is the first day of December. That means National Pie Day and Eat a Red Apple Day. It’s also Rosa Parks Day. Before we get into all the ins and outs of today, let’s just stop a moment to honor Rosa Parks. If ever there were an example of dignified courage, it is Rosa Parks.

Mississippi Mason Jar Flavors

Oh my gosh, can you believe it? Tomorrow is the first day of December! I don’t know if I should be happy or afraid that 2020 is nearly behind us. Will it go out with a bang or a whimper? The last day of November is Mason Jar Day, Mousse Day and Mississippi Day. How great is that? It’s also Stay Home Because You’re Well Day and Cyber Monday. So why not enjoy a good meal while shopping online?

The Advent Season Begins

Today is the first Sunday of Advent. Our Advent Wreath will grace our dinner table each evening as we embark on the new liturgical year as Catholics. The traditions and rituals of Advent bring comfort and peace to those who believe.

Let the Holidays Begin

Today is National French Toast Day. So I bet you are wondering what in the world French Toast has to do with the beginning of the Holiday Season. Today is also National Small Business Day. While the rest of the world might go insane on Black Friday, we like to finish our Christmas Shopping on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. And we do so by visiting the Mom and Pop small businesses and craft vendors that set up shops in the town square. I’d rather support my neighbors, small family run businesses that the big stores.

Oh What a Delicious Day

Today we celebrate National Bavarian Cream Pie Day. Bavarian Cream, while a form of Custard, was originally stiffened with gelatin, placed in a mold and the served much like Jello today, but creamier. The first time I tasted Bavarian Cream was in a yummy Raspberry Charlotte. It was served at a mountain lodge outside Las Vegas. While the lodge is still there, alas the Charlotte is no longer part of their menu.

Italian Meatball Soup

Good Morning Everyone! Happy Thanksgiving. Since I’ve already shared my Thanksgiving recipes for a small gathering, I thought I’d share something non-Thanksgiving for those who aren’t celebrating this American Holiday.
